Haha, Erster...

Hier also mein Text:

es gibt wieder eine neue Testversion 16.90b7.

Neues:
- Lupe in Anzeige
- Werkzeug "Teiltransparenz"

diverse Kleinigkeiten

Hi all,

Please don´t get me wrong, I don´t want to sound rude or anything  , but somehow I feel like the people who do not speak german are a little "out" from here, is awesome to see this constant beta releases and all this new features but for example in the video I wanted to understand what is being told  (I know you can follow the image :) )
I bet that is a pain for the developers start worrying about writing everything in two languages but the non german speakers maybe can give a little more feedback.

BTW. When I use the border matting tool in the Tool setting the check box is in german: Weiche Auswahlbereiche verwenden.

Cheers

Hallo Gerhard,

Markus

I viewed the German language YouTube video, and from the visuals and the Google translatiions of the Deutsche(?) posts here so far, I assume the new Border Matting tool is designed to be used in semi-transparent areas of a region to be cut out. My assessment of the effectiveness of the Border Matting Tool in inclusive. I plan to try it on an image with flyaway human hair later tonight.

But here are my conclusions and questions based on tests of 16.90B7 based on work with two images:

1. The Quick Selection tool appears to be fast and efficient with its intelligent outlining of main parts to be selected, and it seems to require much less tweaking thant other similar tools/plug-ins I have tried.
2. When the Quick Selection tool finished its work and a copy is then made and pasted as a new layer or new document, the isolated part of the image contains no ghosts around the cutout or no transient holes near the edge of the cutout. That has been a problem requiring more work in some other products.

Now some questions:

1. Should the Border Matting tool be included as part of the Quick Selection tool with a button on the Tool Settings of Quick Selection? To me, that would seem to be more efficient.
2. Should the Border Matting operation have a separate color?
3. Should there be a Process button in the Tool Settings section for Copy to New Layer or Copy to New Document? Again, to me that would be more efficient.
4. Should the Quick Selection tool have an adjustable "Smooth" function to lessen the sharp turns in the selection line? I'm attaching a screen cap of an enlarged section of the top of a shaved head in an image. The edge width was set for 5, providing for a smoother transition to the layer to be placed behind the selection, but note the rough and jagged sections caused by color variations. Application of the Border Matting did not seem to improve the edge. Perhaps, a way to smooth the selection a big might make this look better.

(Really great work on this tool, guys! This is going to be a great addition to the PL tool lineup!)

Bob

I tried on flyaway hair and lace around the edges of a subject, and it did not distinguish between the highlighted strands of hair and the background. Nor did it properly interpret the semi-transparent property of lace.

Perhaps I'm using Border Matting wrong. Perhaps someone could enlighten me.

ich habe das Zebra mal unter
http://www.pl32.de/plbin/forum/1a.pld
abgelegt.

For years there were only German speakers in this forum, so I guess it will take a while to get customed to English readers. And it's easier to write in your own language, there's always a word you can't remember and you have to look up in your dictionary. But I'll try to keep in mind that there are English readers now, too. :)

I know that is way easier to speak in your own language (my mother language is spanish, now I speak english and finnish too :S) but that´s the advantage od babelfish for example :), I guess this is the part that you could call globalization :)
Maybe this is a good sign that the software is getting better and better so more people are coming here :)
Thank you so much and I know this is a big effort from your side too :D

Back to topic, Bob made good points in the workflow and maybe making everything in just one tool, and even we can mark/paint just the "fuzzy" area so the calculation focus in just that place and maybe save calculation time. Less click the better.

Hallo

I don't think so for two reasons:
- The masks of the quick mask tool and of the border matting tool might seem similar at a first glance, but while you only need a few coarse scribbles for the quick mask tool, you will need a very precise mask for the border matting tool. So the two masks don't really have a lot in common.
- I agree, that most of the time the quick mask tool will be the first step before using the border matting tool. But often the automask or the magnetic lasso are useful first steps, too.
OldRadioGuy hat geschrieben:2. Should the Border Matting operation have a separate color?
You mean a third color (aside from the yellow for the foreground and the red for the background) for the currently transparent areas? The transparent areas (instead of a color) have the advantage, that they don't hide the fine details in the picture.
OldRadioGuy hat geschrieben:3. Should there be a Process button in the Tool Settings section for Copy to New Layer or Copy to New Document? Again, to me that would be more efficient.
This might be useful.

A simple smoothing isn't useful in the general case. I can't say, why there are those jaggies your image without seeing the original, but all the masking and matting algorithms are affected by strong JPEG compression.
