Replace Color - Updates

I like to take the opportunity to ask for an easy way to replace colors as shown.
The source color is easily sampled using the color picker and sliders in the Hue/Saturation tool
but alas taking the destination color from the same or a different picture is another story.
The trial and error method using the Hue-Brightness-Saturation sliders is hopeless I think.
Any ideas ?

Duplicate the layer and change the display mode from normal to color. Then sample the original color with the color picker, open the color dialog for the foreground color, change the mode to HSV and drag the Hueslider to the requested color. Then you can use color replace or just paint with the brush. It is easy, if just the color has to be changed. It is hard to change a dark into a light color.

Add two colour posiiton markers to show the colour which you want to change and destination colour. Switch the colour position display to HIS for the two markers. Then you can adjust the H, I and S values of the source colour to match the second colour.

There is one problem, though – there's a rainbow coloured transition zone between the two blues – PL insists on going from blue to blue via purple, red, yellow, green. You can see this in the colour translation display at the bottom of the Hue/Saturation dialogue. The more you change the hue, the more the red-yellow-green range will shrink, but it will never disappear.

To fix this, you could just add a layer in mode colour and fix the transition (basically in the way which SCX just described). You can also pick the desired colour using the Colour Picker or just use the copy brush.

It is hard to change a dark into a light color.

Sometimes it's useful to adjust just the brightness using the Hue/Saturation panel, and to do the actual colouring with a new layer in mode "colour" – this avoids the colour transition problem mentioned above.

This color gradient is already in the original image. I think, it's created by the scaling and JPEG compression of the image.
While equalizing the hue transition is not that hard, equalizing the saturation differences in the gradient part isn't easy, because neighbouring pixels have very similar hue values, but quite different saturations.

ok, another method that helps a bit

-select color (mask mode) pick the color you want to replace
-invert mask (Shift+Alt+i)
-choose lasso
-rclick, choose "convert selection to layer"
-edit the color (Alt+F)

More manual control:
1) add vector rectangle with the required colour
2) set vector layer to "color" blend mode
3) add layer mask to vector layer, and paint with black to remove colour from unwanted areas.

... Or use a layer mask based on a colour selection.

If required, add a curve adjustment to the vector layer to control the strength of the colour. Works best in Lab mode grey channel.
