one problem still persists though, that it is impossible to turn off the handles, they are invisible, but still active.
I am at a disadvantage being on a slow connection and unable to watch the video and also not have used PS since v.5.5 and having no idea what moving the selection in PS involves.
However, I am very happy with cut/copy and paste as layer -- I use it A LOT. One thing I like about it is that it is the built-in safety of working with this feature.

I suspect your idea of "slow" and my idea of slow are different thing! I have keyboard shortcuts set up and apart from the adjustments to the copied part of the image, it is just three keyboard things - copy, paste as a layer, flatten.
If you are cloning and want to do several copies of your selection in different places, you simply dupe the new (copy) layer in the Layers list panel.
