Req: HDR DNG image format support

Post by photoken » Thu 29 May 2014 02:28

There's a new RAW image format -- DNG HDR images, that would be great for PL to support.

In short, the HDR DNG images are DNG raw files containing a single image with 16-bit floating point values created by the HDRmerge utility.

Information Resources

The main HDRmerge site (explanations and usage instructions at the bottom of the page):
https://github.com/jcelaya/hdrmerge

The download page for release versions of HDRmerge:

An enthusiastic explanation (with examples) from a member of the RawTherapee team:
http://rawtherapee.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5426

Adobe's main DNG page where the DNG 1.4 specification can be found:

I've just installed the Windows 64-bit version and I'm very impressed with the results. This is a reduced size sample -- a lowered quality JPG image from the 16-bit TIF image that was the RT output:
P1000085-1000087.jpg
The original images (from my LF1) were a automatic series taken at -0.67EV, -1.67EV, and 0.33EV with the camera mounted on a tripod. The day was very windy, and all the movement of the leaves and branches in the trees caused fits for other HDR merge software (PL, PaintShopPro, and Luminance HDR). The new HDRmerge utility perfectly accommodated the movement between exposures.

The resulting HDR DNG image maintained all the subtle tonality of the highlights (the bright side of the white car) as well as the shadows.

Added:
To show the severity of the windblown movement, this is a 100% section from PL's HDR Merge using the same three images that shows the ghosting:

Added:
For comparison, here's a screenshot of the thumbnail images displayed in RT. The three RW2 images are the source files, the DNG image is the unchanged output from HDRmerge, and the TIF file is the output from RT after severely massaging the DNG image. Even given the limitations of the preview thumbnails and the reduced quality JPG of the screen capture, you can see that the HDRmerge app gave more contrast to the clouds, and darkened the blue of the sky.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

I've started to experiment with hdrmerge, and I also find it pleasant for workflow. I'd love PhotoLine to support for files it produces, although going through RawTherapee isn't a big deal to me. At the least, it'd be nice if PhotoLine didn't crash, which happened to me.

Which version of PhotoLine does crash with which picture? Can you send me an example to support@pl32.com?
