Prob: Inconsistent rendering of var. width line end

Beitrag von photoken »

Win10 x64
PL 20.40b6 x64

A variable-width vector line does not smoothly flow into its end.

Steps to reproduce:
  1. Create a variable-width vector line with a maximum width of 50px.
  2. Give that line a gradient stroke.
  3. In the Layer panel for the line, duplicate the properties.
  4. Change the width of the bottommost line property to 76px, and its stroke to a solid colour.
Result:
The variable width abruptly jerks into the end of the line:
line end flat.png
line end flat.png (27.89 KiB) 3408 mal betrachtet
This is especially noticeable if the line end is set to round:
line end round.png
line end round.png (25.84 KiB) 3408 mal betrachtet
Expected result:
The variable width should smoothly flow into the end.

Here's the test PLD:

(10.51 KiB) 90-mal heruntergeladen

I think I'm missing a point. Beside of your issue, frm where to give that gradient stroke?
The fill color is transparent (as expected)
The line color (which should be) is fixed color. Or even not, when I change to a fixed color, gradient is still there.

Not in the color dropdown nor in the vector lines menu. There is no option for that stroke?
Even I can not cancel the stroke. Seems function is hidden somewhere not expected.

Thank you.
And IMHO this control placed in an inappropriate place. I even didn't think to check there

AFAICS the butt cap is calculated correctly. I think this is partly an optical effect (the curvature of the line is suddenly stopped and continued by a straight line) and partly an effect of the slope of the line width curve.

The round cap is wrong. I will fix that.

Well, layer attributes are in the Layer Attributes dialog. This is true for nearly all attributes, aside from a few (blend mode, intensity, visibility) that are - because of historical reasons - in the layer list

Due to PL's workflow, the first place appears in mind was line attributes (line style editor) containing style, join, ending, pattern etc. Maybe the toolbox menu of vector edit can be the best to place additionally? Always under hand

Yes, it looks like that to me, too.

I noticed the problem when experimenting with an answer to a user in another product's user forum. He was looking for a way to create smoothly flowing objects for a paint scheme for model aircraft. It occurred to me that this would also be useful for automobile paint schemes, product packaging design, logo design, etc.
