16 bit support for brushes is really important, because painting in Linear gamma gives more accurate blending between colors. But with brushes limited to 8 bit it always be a banding artifacts in Linear gamma and so artwork will be damaged.
And it is not only about painting brushes. Other brush-based tools like "Eraser" also 8 bit only.
I do agree however that it is essential that there is a way to stamp 16bit large textures. I don't recall exactly, but I believe the stamp tool retains full 16bit/32bit values?
"Remove Brush" and other similar cloning tools partially affected by this problem. Here is example with soft "Copy Brush" in 16 bit. Gradient cloned in the middle is true 16 bit, but in the soft edges of the brush gradient start to show 8 bit banding artifacts.
So currently if we edit large spots on 16 bit photo with soft "Remove Brush", we introduce 8 bit areas around those spots and so permanently damage 16 bit image source.

Agreed, it would be good to have. I just tested in Krita: same result.

While apps like Affinity Photo are absolutely terrible at 8bit blending compared to PhotoLine, all apps (Photoshop, Krita, Affinity) just look much better when working in 16 bit mode with smooth brushes and the transitions.

With HDR work it indeed may damage the artwork.

Yes.
shijan wrote: Mon 23 Aug 2021 08:31And seems that limited bit depth is the main reason why Layer styles size is to limited in PhotoLine.
The main reason is that it should be possible to set the value reasonably via the slider.
shijan wrote: Mon 23 Aug 2021 08:31Too huge shadow effects in 8 bit depth looks really bad.

Here is example from other app with huge Shadow Outside effect generated in 8 and 16 bit document:
I can't comment on that. As always: A small sample document would be useful.

Well, keep things limited due too short amount of slider sounds strange. Brush Tool use slider and same time can be adjusted in range from 1 to 2000. Also there are key modifiers that allow to fine adjust slider value to tiny steps. I can understand that some limitations could be due backward compatibility in already created PLD files.
Large sized layer shadows and effects, is a default for any image editing app. These effects are essential and widely used in any design work.

But anyway, if Layer Styles are 8bit only, it make no sense to make them larger because they will produce a lot of banding. So even if Layer Styles itself may be not the main priority, hope you could sometime re-code them to 16 bit and extend maximum allowed size.

I will change that.

This seems to happen with non-Retina displays. I will check that.

Herbert123 wrote: Wed 25 Aug 2021 19:35 I also wouldn't mind if the Curves would display a greyscale bar at the bottom and an option to inverse the display by right-mouse clicking that bar. For print work the light values are often positioned to the left since it indicates EXTRA ink. The triangles would indicate the start and end values of the range using the greyscale bar - it becomes functional and easier to control.
Gradient bars on the axes of the curves graph are especially helpful in Lab mode, using the a and b curves.

In previous versions, when I zoomed in, PL zoomed in to the active element(s), but in this version it just centres to the view of the document. The 'old' way was much more handy!
