Artefacts on layers

Post by gennadiy »

Color management - OFF.
Lower layer - 16bit.
Create an empty layer for drawing - 8bit.
When drawing a brush (healing brush), various artefacts on screen appear, up to the program crashing.

You can't use an empty layer with the healing brush. Healing is a destructive function. Just duplicate the 16 bit image layer and use the healing brush (or the Remove Brush) to modify the image. If you don't like your modifications, you can delete the duplicate and make a new one. Your original image will be intact and unmodified.

1. You CAN use transparent (empty) layer with the healing brush.
2. Do not turn off color management. Seems it required for bit depth convert between layers in realtime.

By the way, there is a bug in Patch Tool and Healing Brush when highlights became blue (color management is enabled). Maybe it is somehow linked to bit depth artifacts described in this thread? Already emailed this to developers...

It is quite useful to draw the corrections into a new, empty layer. To do this, you need to set "Source" to something other than "Source Layer" in the tool settings. This way the original image remains unchanged and you can edit your corrections later.

Thank you for the detailed description. I didn't know the trick with the »Source: Active and Below«. However, the brushed part looks faint compared to the underlying image, I guess that's because it is a healing brush.

You should get the same result regardless of whether you edit the original image or paint into a new layer.

Do you have a sample image to reproduce the problem?

Are extreme values switched off?

Yes, extreme values switched off. Seems problem was partially fixed in 23.00rc1 and there is no more artifacts described by gennadiy.
But Healing Brush and Patch Tool still looks strange. They generate small amount of color cast in highlights and other colors looks partially desaturated. Bug was already emailed to developers.
No such a problem with Remove Brush tool.

BTW, the crash is fixed in 23.00RC1.

This is a strange comparison.

The Healing Brush doesn't copy content, but differences in hue and brightness. While the color cast in your example isn't really nice, it doesn't affect the usefulness for what it is intended. Its most prominent use case is removing pimples or moles from a portrait.
So there are three correction tools, each of which has its own advantages:
  • The advantage of the healing brush is that it automatically adjusts the brightness and hue of the source to the destination. You don't have to find a perfect source, it just has to have a similar structure.
  • Use the Copy brush, if you really want to copy pixels.
  • Use the Remove Brush, if you want to reconstruct non existant content like removing a traffic sign from a photo.

Ok, from this point of view final result produced by Healing Brush looks logical. Thanks for explanation!
