saving scanned photos

I like the program's ease but when I scanned a number of photos and wanted to save them it closed down. I wanted to save the photos as "no name" with consecutive numbers but I lost all the scans. I used the SAVE ALL command. I use Mac OSX on a G5 with 30gb HDD free space

Is this normal or should I be doing something else. I am desperate to find a program that allows me to scan hundreds of old photos as easily as possible. But I also need to view them to see that the whole photo is scanned properly. I use an Epson Scanner Perfection 3170. Iphoto works but takes too long.
