Please find below a script simulating the sharpening method developed by Mike Chaney from Qimage. More info on the theory behind the technique can be found here:

The action leaves the background layer untouched and overlays it with a sharpened layer ( sharpened most for red and blue saturated regions, less for green saturated regions, and no sharpening for colorless regions; no sharpening for extreme highlights and dark regions).The strength of the effect can be adjusted with transparency of the "sharpness equalizer" layer.
This script should be mostly useful for full resolution images as a pre-sharpen step. Some cameras might be already compensating for the phenomenon observed by Mike Chaney in their JPEG output.
