Can that be "translated"?

Do we have in Photoline all needed tools to do that kind of separationf from a background?

I have watched that video quite a while ago. As far as I remember you will do more work with layers than with channels, and instead of dodge & burn I have chosen a histogram-working-layer and masking that.
(Sorry, I'm in a hurry, maybe later more...)

That should not be to difficult: switch the display mode of the top layer to "Linear dodge" (which is a simple add-operation), select to two layers in the layer panel and execute the command "Reduce to One Layer" of the Layer Panels context menu.
