I just downloaded the plugin and tested it with some pictures here.
It seems to work, 2 problems:
- No Pluginname is shown, so you have to select "Empty Entry"
- I can find a 32 Bit Plugin only

I tried the ProEXR plugin from http://www.fnordware.com/ProEXR/, and it seems to work flawlessly in PL 64bit. The (paid) pro version opens my multi-layer EXR file files with multiple passes without a hitch - I just need to set the correct layer blend modes. Only one file tried so far, and I will test some more and report back here. If it works as advertized in Photoline I plan to purchase a license. Though it would be nice if PL supported these type of files natively ;-) hint hint

The "official" OpenEXR 32bit plugin would not work for me.

By the way, does PL have a normalize filter? I would like to normalize my depth pass, but I can't seem to find it. Any tips?

I'm not 100% sure what normalize means. Maybe histogram-correction + automatic-button? That should fit the whole range into [0-1]. Or something with equal distribution? Then try "filter > quality > optimize contrast".

That will not work on an image with values beyond the 0-1 range.

From Blender, about the Normalize node:
Normalization is an engineering term that means to transform one set of values into another set of values that is easier to understand. The Normalize node does this for any range of values and greatly simplifies the problem of visualizing information that is out of the range of 0 to 1, such as the Z-depthbuffer, or the vector-buffer of a render.

Using this node greatly simplifies the process of examining Z values because it intelligently scales “real” values (noninfinity) to a range of 0 to 1.

Anything similar in Photoline?

Unfortunately, after some testing ProEXR will load multi-layer (and single layer) exr files, but:
- holding down shift for the import properties dialog results in an empty file (bit silly to not open a dialog window as standard);
- and, more crucially, exporting an EXR file is not working (exr file format does not show up in the save file dialog)

Also, I checked the pricing again, and that plugin by itself is costs more than a license of Photoline. No go for me.

The free version will load single layer EXR files, though.

You lost me here, sorry :D

Sadly :(
They provide the source code, maybe PL can implement it to make it native for 64 and 32 Bit? I have no idea how that licensing goes for them.

True, is way too out of my budget.

I can´t find it anywhere :S

Cheers

Download the trial at the bottom of the page, either for mac or windows. Unzip, open the Photoshop folder, and in the 32bit or 64bit folder (depending on whether you work with 32 bit Photoline or the 64bit version) there are two plugins: ProEXR EZ.8bi (the free version supporting only one layer) and ProEXR.8bi (commercial trial version).

Copy either one or both to the PL plugin folder, and reboot Photoline. A new entry is added to the file menu: OpenEXR.

That's it. Supposedly holding down the shift key while loading an EXR file opens up an import settings dialog, but that only results in a blank file. In addition, exporting to an EXR is unsupported in Photoline, because the output format does not show up in the save as file types. Nor does the ProEXR export layers as EXR show up in the export menu :-(

At least we can import single layer exr files now in Photoline - but it would be brilliant if Photoline integrated this format, since the 3d/compositing/video industries rely quite a lot on this format for float images, and Photoline's support for 16/32bit is great - a bit of a no-brainer to raise interest in Photoline. OpenEXR was invented with these type of images in mind as an exchange format. And the source code is available at the OpenEXR website - ready to be integrated in Photoline. (hint hint)
