Tutorial: An Introduction to Photo Editing with PhotoLine
Hello; I have uploaded a tutorial to
http://www.russellcottrell.com/photo/Ph ... /index.asp
“This tutorial is designed both for people who are coming to PhotoLine from another image editing application, as well as for people who are new to photo editing and for whom PhotoLine is their first application. It is intended to be a “walk-through” of the main tasks associated with photo editing rather than a comprehensive reference.”
Feedback is welcome. I admit I was teaching myself while writing it as I wanted to force myself to make the switch once and for all. And I wrote it with my kids in mind; I wanted to set down in writing what I had taught them about curves and so forth as a general beginner’s guide. Obviously there is more to it than this; the manual still exists. Mac users, please tell me if I missed anything.

A note about your new RAW image section:
The Chromatic Aberration paragraph inaccurately describes the Width Compensation setting. According to the PL Help
The Chromatic Aberration paragraph inaccurately describes the Width Compensation setting. According to the PL Help
I understand that to mean that deselecting Width Compensation will allow the CA correction to vary according to the distance from the center of the image. Counter-intuitive, and I got fooled by this big time. Like you, I've noticed a definite improvement with this option turned off.Width Compensation ensures, that the displacement at all edges is the same regardless of the distance to the center.

I saw that; I guess I didn’t believe it. It does seem to make sense the other way around.
I expanded the section on sharpening:

Russell I've only had a quick glance at your site so far. But it looks great. Many of us here on this forum have been procrastinating for far too long about doing something. You need congratulating for doing something that none of us ever got around to.
If you need any support or help please ask.
Well done.

In your new Sharpening section, you state:
I prefer to use RT for processing RAW images; and with PL's excellent ability to use external programs, RT has become a very useful "PL plugin" for me (for non-RAW images)....
Doesn't RawTherapee provide all those? If not as a specific tool, than as embedded in the controls for some of its tools. No application that I know of provides unsharp masking, deconvolution, halo control, and edge masking, and I recommend sharpening with a plugin.

Re: Tutorial: An Introduction to Photo Editing with PhotoLine
Well, I guess it does. But in an either-or form . . . . It has been a long time since I used it for anything else but straight raw processing; I have always taken images directly to “another application” for editing.

Re: Tutorial: An Introduction to Photo Editing with PhotoLine
Great job Russell,
I know how much work it is, to create such a tutorial.
Amazingly, but a never ending story... there is soooo much left to write about.
You/we could write a book about PL? It is too mighty.
Keep on writing...
Best regards
toni

Re: Tutorial: An Introduction to Photo Editing with PhotoLine
I hope Russell doesn't mind but I made my own PDF version! Simply open the page. Do a select all and then a copy. Paste into a program such as Word. Then once finished save the document as a PDF. There maybe faster and easier ways but this works for me. It gives you the ability to format the PDF to suit.
