How to sketch with filters and adjustments from an image

Beitrag von dutchman »

This is a tip for the beginners as for more experienced users of PhotoLine as well.
The steps you have to take are different from/for another image.
For this image this works. Other images needs somewhat other adjustments.
If you have any questions... a PM to me and you will get the original (image size is too large)
The explanation is underneath the first image.

Now the explanation of how it COULD work for you.

You can use a curves layer to adjust the intensity of either of the image layers.

To use the result as a layer mask, such as for a sharpen or denoise layer:

1. Make a merged copy of the sketch
2. Invert it (Tool - Color - Invert) if you want to apply the effect to the edges, such as for sharpening; otherwise it will be masked from the edges, such as for denoise
3. Tool - Change Channels - Source L, Destination Clipboard, Copy
4. Go to the layer mask of the sharpen or denoise layer
5. Tool - Change Channels - Source Clipboard, Destination Black, Copy
6. Show the mask (right click - Show Mask) and adjust it with curves and gaussian blur if needed

Another way to make such a mask is with the outline filter:

Filter - Stylize - Outline Filter

Hi Russell,
it's always usefull to show the workout.
There are a thousand ways to realize a sketch like this.
A sample with outlinefilter I've already made with a sample four years ago and presented here on another place.
The result is not, what I want to achieve here.

Anyway... thanks for your suggestions.
If you like... make a workout.

Resized image, somewhat oversharpened using unsharp mask.

Using an outline filter as a mask; adjusted with curves and gaussian blur, then inverted. Sharpening is applied only to edges, and masked from smooth areas. After you apply the mask, you can adjust the sharpening some more.

The mask. You could, of course, touch it up by painting on it here and there.

Thanks Russell

Interesting solution. Somehow similar to frequency separation.

I have some difficulty to follow your workflow.
Question 1 : Why is the "Unsharp mask" adjustment layer a sub layer to the background. Rather than an adjustment immediately above the background.
Question 2 : I understand that the last layer on top of the pile is a merged copy of the group immediately underneath ; and inverted. Is that right ?
Question 3 : Both the last layer and the group are not "visible". Then, what are the next steps to make usage of this last layer as a mask ?

Thanks a lot if you could elaborate.

Best regards.

1. Because I had Group With Previous Layer selected, as dutchman evidently did.
2. Yes, you have to make a merged copy for Change Channels to work.
3. Use Change Channels; the steps are given in the earlier post above.

Perfect Russell.
I understood. And it works.
I would love a non-destructive version ... but I don't know if the "Change channel" would work.

Thanks a lot for sharing.

Non destruktive on the right.
I only could work on a very small image.

Then I did an oulinefilter (most right) version but with a white skin and black pencil sketches.
Both on the right are non destructive and complete adjustible.

I don't understand.
Could you elaborate and give detail of what you did ...

Hi Phillippe,
in detail no, but as a screenshot.
You have to try and play with the values.
Or send me a Personal Message with your emailaddress, then I can send you my original, with all the values.
