Color Lookup Adjustment layer

Beitrag von PhilM »

The Color Lookup layer does not accept LUT diagrams as HaldCLUT (.png)
HaldCLUT is a 2D representation of a 3D LUT stored in an image file.

This model is used by Rawtherapee to simulate films.

HaldCLUTs are simple to manage and create with an image editor.
You can store many adjustment layers just like multi-layer preset : contrast, gamma, hue, saturation, curves, grey mixer ... ; in just one .png file.

Several HaldCLUTs are available for (free)download on the web.

Would it be a huge task to handle HaldCLUT format within the PL Color Lookup layer ?

See for tech details :

Why not stick with 3D LUT which is a standard everywhere else?

I believe you cannot open a 3D LUT as an image layer.

HaldCLUT is an image that can be modified with adjustment layers and saved as a new CLUT.
There is a special HaldCLUT : "identity" that does no color translation.
You open "identity", apply adjustments (hue, saturation, ...) and save it as a new CLUT that contains (baked in) the cumulated transform of the adjustments.

Have a look at the links in my original posts.

Lots of HaldCLUTs presets are available ...

Well, thanks, I've already done it.

That is definitely not my world, I prefer realistic and authentic colors, because I am a photographer and not a color grading artist or a painter... To me the content of an image is more important than a visual effect which will rub off after a short time.

The reason why I asked: PL is a fantastic and precise image editing software. I want it to stay that way. So I would recommend to stick to standards if the developers should ever want to step into color grading features, instead of adapting an unimportant trend.

CLUTs aren't limited to image grading, they are just a way of recording (complex) colour adjustments (many icc profiles use CLUTs, btw.), and CLUT layers in PL could be very useful for raw processing (at the moment, PL is limited to matrix profiles).

IMO, HaldCLUTs are a clever way of storing such CLUTs, and I like the idea that CLUTs can be recorded in such a simple way. Since they are very similar in structure to 3dl and cube CLUTs, it shouldn't be hard to support them in PL (and supporting another clut format doesn't make using PL more complicated).

Btw., HaldCluts seem to be widely supported in the freeware image editing world (e.g., ImageMagick, GIMP/G'MIC use them).

In the meantime, https://filterhunt.com offers a free conversion tool.

Thanks Burkhard for supporting the suggestion.

It should be just an additional format in the existing "Color Lookup" adjustment layer.

It is a clever way to bake a set of adjustment layers into one object.
Example : b&w conversion > Grey mixer + Curves + Contrast > bw.png

I have found a software to manipulate CLUTs.
It offers a (batch) conversion tool between many CLUT formats.

PL has all the tools to cook and bake HaldCLUTs.

But it can't use them.
Because the "Color lookup" layer does not accept the format ...
