PhotoLine Basic Asset Library Project

Post by Herbert123 »

Similar to Shijan with his Icon customization project, I decided to start a core asset library for PhotoLine users. PhotoLine's standard assets are rather terse compared to other packages, so I'd like to hope that these prove useful.

I will update these (hopefully) on a regular basis. Feel free to contribute. I can set anyone up as a contributor in GitLab.

Download the first colour palette library and gradient library here:
https://gitlab.com/Herbert123/photoline ... ts-library

Have fun! The colour palettes are already quite useful, I feel.

Important! This asset library is made for the latest beta 24.40b10 and later. This version introduces the option to group colours, patterns, brushes, textures, etc. It may not work correctly on previous releases.

*Update 21 April 2024*
New C64 colour palettes
Added many new web gradients

*Updated 15 april 2024*

PS These colour palettes may need you to increase the width of the colors panel to make best use of them.

For example, this one taken from Krita:

So you might want to play around with the width of the panel to get the order right. :-)

Here is another example:

That's could be really nice collection i guess!
Some time ago i find this set based on Copic marker colours from Sketchbook https://krita-artists.org/t/358-copic-c ... ches/41207
File Copic 358 colours.aco contains all colours, the others, contain a particular colour family. The filename tells which family it is, based on the abbreviations Copic uses. This allows you to load the colours you want

And also sometimes i use this free collection https://www.dunnedwards.com/colors/down ... -swatches/
The values that represent these Perfect Palette® colors have been developed by Dunn-Edwards’ color development lab and are regarded as the electronic standard of the color and are provided for general color information and illustration purposes only. However, Because of the differences in computer monitors, printers, other hardware and software combinations, the depicted results are intended to be used as approximations of color and not as definitive representations, and should not be relied upon or used as such.

Seems a program bug. I got program crash in this situation:
- Merge gradients.plgd or Colour_Palettes_R01.plgd
- Ungroup main group
- Switch between tabs few times quickly
- Program crash

Oh, I like that copic colour scheme! I've added that one and the perfect palette one as well (I had found that one last week, but forgot to add it - or rather, I had added it, but made the mistake of dragging a new colour file into the panel, and it replaced all my changes that I had not saved yet...)

I haven't experienced any crashes yet myself; but then again, I haven't been clicking around like that either :D

My main issue so far has been that dragging a colour palette file into the colors panel will actually REPLACE the existing ones instead of merging them (see my earlier comment).
Now that we have access to groups, I strongly feel that merging ought to be the default behaviour.

Ok, now i broke everything :) After program restart it always resets to default palette. Could it be due some conflict with legacy .pal or imported .aco collection format with new .plgd collection format?

I keep everything in PhotoLine preferences folders like this and merge palettes and gradients directly from those folders:

Perhaps a bug? Or the result of manually organizing things directly in those folders rather than importing/loading the assets in PhotoLine?

I import/load assets from those folders. It is just easier to keep everything i one place like this. If simply put to "Palettes" folder palettes don't appears in menu. I still need to load/merge them manually.
I wish they work like those "special" ColorLookup, ICCProfiles, Stamp folders when PhotoLine reads files instantly from those folders and don't require to load files manually.

It really seems like a bug in PhotoLine. Some conflict between load/merge new groups structure and select legacy multiple items in menu.

By the way: Is there something like a color space/profile for palettes?

Al those palettes and gradients presets usually designed for sRGB color space/TRC (gamma). So in different color spaces and TRCs they start to look very different. Color space changes, but palette color numbers remains the same. They behave like this in all apps and it is sort of problem
Earlier i got an idea/improvement here https://www.pl32.com/forum3/viewtopic.p ... 643#p49643 for special menu item to convert Palette with Color Profile. It is unique idea and there is no any app that can do it like this yet.

Step by step concept:
- Right click on color in Color Editor or multiple selected color samples in Color List.
- Click on panel menu item "Convert with Color Profile"
- "Convert with Color Profile" pop-up window appears.
- Select ICC profile "From"
- Select ICC profile "To"
- Click OK
Palette colors now visually optimized for new color space and TRC (gamma).

Might be tricky, you could loose "real" black and white.
Optional assigning a space to a palette or palettes in general came to my mind, but that could have the same problem.
And what about document colors?

I guess "undefined" will have to do.

So i fixed problem by renaming my main collection to DefaultPalette.pal and replace with it original DefaultPalette.pal.
Hope this bug could be fixed in future versions and legacy menu sorting will be optimized somehow and will not conflict with .plgd format.

Herbert123, it is really nice Palettes collection. This really improves user experience from start. I also noticed that default panels layout now looks much better than in older versions, based on ours suggestions. Everything looks way more user friendly from clean start now.

I tested your Asset Library on Windows and seems there is no any crash there. So this is macOS only bug.
Also In Windows Palette always switches to Default only if loaded legacy .pal .aco formats. If use .plgd it remembers it. On macOS it always reset to Defaults.
On both macOS and Windows lists don't remember scrolled position and returns to top or to some random unknown position, once i click to other tab and back.
Also i guess picker cursor should be changed to normal cursor when it is outside patches area. Currently it feels a little strange to expand groups using picker cursor:

It seems some bug in ps default palette. Many black patches instead of actual colors.
Or is this some different ps? Here is how looks exported/imported .aco file from Ps CC2018 compare to your ps
Here is side by side compare.
