Exposure Adjustment Sliders Scroll Steps Discussion

Post by shijan »

I discussed this idea with Martin Huber and we agreed that this question should be placed to public discussion to hear opinion from other users.

I work a lot with Exposure adjustment and for my opinion Exposure, Offset, Gamma sliders feels very well balanced in speed when use mouse scroll. By default they adjust values by quick rough steps, and if i need more precise steps, i just press Shift key and scroll.
Same time Luminance and Contrast use totally different logic. By default they move slider to tiny steps, so i need to scroll a lot, or press complicated Command+Alt keys combo to scroll by larger steps.

So here is my suggestion:
:arrow: For Luminance slider (that use range -150 to 150) change default mouse scroll step to 10 or 5. (Shift+scroll 1 step)
:arrow: For Contrast slider (that use range -50 to 100) change default mouse scroll step to 5. (Shift+scroll 1 step)

Gamma slider may be changed to 0.05 step instead of current 0.1 step, but in all other places Gamma changes by 0.1 step, so that special 0.05 step may feels unusual.
UPDATE. Gamma slider in Optimize HDR and White Point use 0.05 step. But in Levels, Curves and Exposure it use 0.1 step. So i guess Gamma slider could be standardized everywhere to 0.05 step.

And one more idea for discussion. Don't you think that "Exposure" adjustment located in totally wrong menu group (Filter->Quality). It is simple tone curve manipulation tool, so technically belongs to same main group as Curves and Levels.

From my point of view, there should be consistency throughout all the sliders, eg. scroll=1 step, Shift+scroll=0.01 step, Alt+scroll=0.1

Juan, It is not so simple. Default scroll step depends of slider range. Step 1 for Gamma or Offset will be visually too huge, so they use normal step 0.1 and 0.001.
Same time Shift+scroll step 0.1 for Luminance is useless because it is too small and visually makes no any changes.

It was a simple example, I didn't meant to use those values. My point is that consistency should be a priority, or maybe a preference settings where the user set the values that they want for each modifier... Just throwing ideas here. 😊

Well currently Shift+scroll creates smaller steps and Command+Alt+scroll creates larger steps. This works everywhere in same way and it is very useful and logical. I don't feel that i need additional more smaller or more larger steps in real life. It could be user adjustable default in preferences, but in reality i personally can't see how it could help.

All i want to say is that Exposure, Offset, Gamma sliders use totally different logic than Luminance and Contrast sliders and this makes work not too comfortable and a little bit slow.

P.S. It is also strange that some sliders like Opacity, Curves, Color Filter, Levels, Threshold use Command+Shift as well as Command+Alt to increase steps to x10. But some others can use only Command+Alt. Is this a bug or some "under development" changes to global key modifiers?

Command+Shift don't works in:
Curves -> Gamma
Levels -> Gamma
Optimize HDR -> Gamma
Hue/Sat -> Hue, Brightness, Saturation
Vibrance (all sliders)
Color Balance (all sliders)

Unsharp Masking, Sharpen, Adaptive Sharpen, Blur, Soften, Adaptive Soften, Motion Blur, Variable Blur, Wipe Effect, Remove Dust Scratches, Remove Dirt, Roughen, Grain, Sponge, Vert. Edge, Hor. Edge, Outline Filter, HighPass, Min, Min Round, Median, Max, Max Round, Descreen, Pixelize, Shake, Dehaze, Descreen:
-> Size, Threshold, Bias, Density,

Lens Correction -> Chromatic
Context Blur (all sliders)
Exposure (all sliders)

Rasterize Image -> Raster Size
Relief -> Size
White Point -> Gamma
Color Temperature -> Temperature
Chromatic Aberration (all sliders)
Denoise -> Size

Brush Editor -> Size

Rectangle Tool -> Soft Edge

This is the behavior I would prefer and support as well. Consistency in all fields with a numerical input would really be very welcomed.

Scroll = normal steps
Shift+Scroll = smaller steps
Command+Shift+Scroll = larger steps

Command+Alt+Scroll key combo is useless and not user friendly at all.
