I think a 64*64 size will be sufficient for me to identify each pages. Hence I set that icon size via the context menu. Unfortunately under such a configuration, the actual size of a thumbnail is far smaller than 64*64.
I usually have it set to a minimum of 128px, and also switch to larger thumbnail sizes depending on the type of work that I do.
But you are correct in saying that the thumbnail size doesn't reflect the actual size of the thumbnail, but of the total square width and height which includes the label size... Perhaps it would be preferable to make sure the height/width of the actual page icon is that size, rather than the entire area with label.
I actually like seeing the page numbers. I do agree that the "page" part could be left out. Perhaps the number could be added to the icon itself, but at smaller thumbnail sizes the number wouldn't fit properly.
A simple preference setting to display or hide the labels/names could be useful to fit the user's preference.
Somehow the display is just bad on my side--is it because I am using a Chinese version?
I changed the icon size to 128*128, it is still a good amount of space waste.

There're two thumbnails in the above screenshot. The first one is the display on my side. The second one is a mockup that it should look like per my suggestion.
You can see that the first one (current implementation) wasted a lot of space around the thumbnail, making the visual part very small -- almost just half of the available space in the 128*128 square. The image in this example is landscape. If it is portrait, the visual part could get event smaller.
My suggested mockup maximizes the thumbnail to fill the square in the grid with the page number and label overlaid on top of the thumbnail. A black shadow or outline can be draw around the white number (or white shadow around the black number, according to the user setting) so it will not be invisible when the image is white.
