PhotoLine does not get enough Internet press attention

Beitrag von OldRadioGuy »

I sometimes get a bit frustrated when I check around the internet for comment about PhotoLine. I suspect many of the "software reviews" found on Internet sites are rigged to sell software, and these sites don't even list PhotoLine.

In addition, when the bigger companies release new software, they supply all kinds of ready-to-use copy and images to bloggers and print media reviewers, and you sometimes have to suspect these reviews. The PL folks certainly don't have the resources to match the large companies' public relations and marketing efforts.

One of the more reliable sites for evaluation is C/NET Download.com. C/Net Download.com has PhotoLine 17.01 listed for download, but their editors' review is a critique of an earlier version written on October 5, 2009.

The CNET Editors' Rating is 3-1/2 stars, Very Good, but the end of their review says they don't recommend it. Fortunately, the Average User Rating is 4 of 5 stars, and the total downloads is over 18,000.

Total downloads more than 18,000 -- but how many purchases?

As for the Hubers not having enough to spend on marketing -- I understand that! As a small book publisher, I'm in much the same boat. On the other hand, actually putting together a PR kit and distributing it by email is not big deal -- once you have your list, it is pretty easy to arrange.

What's needed before that, though is much more basic stuff. A bunch of video tutorials, for example, demonstrating the use of some of PL's best tools and in the case of the launch of a new upgrade, demonstrating the use of the new /improved capabilities.

Once the basic stuff was done, i.e. what PL can do now, updating it for each upgrade would be pretty straightforward.

But for PL to thrive, not merely mark time, there does need to be effort put into marketing. The world is awash with a surfeit of software.

There is no need to /match/ the giants like Adobe, there /is/ a need to do the basic minimum -- put your stuff out there to be noticed. Get it on to lots of sites so that Google, et al, respond to that.

That reminds me, a friend of mine runs the Plugs n Pixel site -- http://plugsandpixels.com/discounts.html -- reviewing and selling plug-ins, etc. He has PhotoLine listed because I have raised is with him a number of times, but any sales that go through his site do not attract a commission for him. The Hubers should be all over such site owners, giving them all a commission for sales through their sites.

Sure, they would be reducing their margin on the initial sales, but with software, the first payment is the least of it. Once people are regularly using software, they are rusted on. Changing apps is a big deal because of the new learning curve -- we all know that. So they will buy upgrade after upgrade after upgrade ... forever!!! Once they buy, you have a pump in their wallet! :)

In any case, the extra sales that could be had from getting listed on such sites and, for example, allowing my mate Mike to offer a discount of, say, 20%, and also to get a healthy slice of the price paid for the first purchase, are "free" sales. They are extra, over and above what the Hubers would normally get. And furthermore, since they are download sales, they cost virtually nothing to service. But t requires people to see the profit in the backside - the profit from upgrades that go on and on and on. In fact, the Hubers ought to think about offering site owners /the entire price a new customer pays/ for the first purchase of PL -- then take their own profit on the upgrades. Can you imagine how hard the site owners would push PL if they had that sort of deal going? I'd start a site myself!!!

Cheers, geoff
