Hue/color layer turns transparency black

Hello,
When using the hue or color blend layers over a normal layer that has locked or unlocked transparent areas the transparent areas turn black. In other words, when painting on the adjustment layer beyond the areas I intend to color those areas turn black. If I use a mask on the adjustment layer or paint carefully I can control it. I thought I would be able to just flood fill multiple blend layers and be able to control the boundries with just one mask or locking the tranparency on the normal layer. Can someone tell me a better way to this?

I've just created a little test-document (Windows 7, PL 17.01)
-Empty background with a few red strokes on them
-Adjustment layer "hue/saturation" above it to turn everything cyan.
-Then some black strokes into its mask.

Looks good for me. How does this look like on your system ?

This probably isn't a problem with an adjustment layer, but with an ordinary layer in blend mode "hue", with a setup like

In that case, I also get

(Maybe the result is a bit surprising, but it is correct if one assumes that PL follows the PDF layer compositing rules. The colour in the black part is actually "undefined", and if you reduce to one layer, it turns white )

A better solution to the problem would be to use a clipping mask. (Convert the alpha channel to a layer mask, then drag it on top of the other layers in the layer dialog.)

A maybe simpler way could be using the "Protect underlying transparency" switch. That's the small transparency icon between the blend mode and the layer intensity. If you turn that on, the background transparency won't be modified.

Doesn't work for me. Seems that the original poster has also tried this first.

And you really tried "Protect underlying transparency" and not "Lock transparency"?

Ah, got it – I have to use it on the hue layer, not the bg layer. That works, thanks!

Awesome!! Protect Underlying Transparency works great! I wanted to work on the bg mask after adding color to a BW since they're areas where I can't define the borders.
