Bye
Very thorough review, imo. There is just one point that puzzles me:
the one thing I miss is the refine edge feature in Photoshop. This one I really, really, really miss.
Maybe I am mistaken about what the "refine edge" feature does in PS, but isn't this similar to the "Enhance edge" feature in PL (in the tool settings of all the lasso tools and the automask tool), or Tools -> Lasso -> Extract Selection … (which has additional settings)?

Cheers

Burkhard.

I don't have Photoshop, but I do usually keep a copy of Photoshop Elements on my computer. The current version -- 11 -- has the Refine Edge tool, which I assume is similar or the same as that found in the parent program.

The Refine Edge tool in PSE11 has several modes and adjustments:
  • Show Radius
    Refine Radius
    Erase Refinements
Smart Radius (to automatically adjust for hard and soft edges)
    Radius Size
Smooth to reduce irregular area in the selection border
    Feather
    Contrast
    Shift Edge
    Decontaminate Colors
    Amount of Decontamination
Output to Selection, Mask on the Current Layer or New Layer or Document

Thanks — so "Refine edges" offers much more than "Enhance Edges" in PL. I suppose that ,any of these extra features can be found in the tool settings for the lasso tool in PL and under Tools -> Mask, but it's hard to judge the details without knowing exactly how PS(E) works. But maybe the remark is more about having everything in a single dialogue than about missing features in PL.

Cheers

The Refine tool is "really a tool". It's a kind of brush with which you paint over a part of your edges, that does not look good. You can tweak the detection algorithm with the forementioned parameters. It's more like a sophisticated and tweakable border matting and edge enhancement tool (please excuse my lack of english formulations to describe what I mean ;)).

It's a great tool but not the "eierlegende Wollmilchsau" (word for word translation: egg laying wool milk sow ;)). But it's good enough, that I licensensed PSE 11 only for that tool instead of a plugin, though I didn't use it on a real world example yet.

Nevertheless: If we could have something like that in PL I would not object ;).
