Make edge of photo dissolve away

Hi has anyone got a quick method to enable me to prepare a simple photograph for the web, that has each of its four sides dissolve, or fade away to nothing, or white, so it has a soft rather than a hard border - ideally being able to change where the fading begins. I've been playing around with various effects, filters, frames etc but can't quite work out how to achieve the simple effect I'm after (getting bogged down due to having so many choices!)

As a separate step, what's the simplest method to make a picture itself slightly more "grainy" please?

Version 17.10 on Mac OSX if it makes a difference.

OK I think I have the answer to the soft border thing based around this tutorial http://www.pl32.com/tutorial/softbord/softbor.htm but using the square selection tool.
