Replace Color - Updates

hi,

Replace Color doesn't smoothly replace the color (as you can see in this picture between bright-yellow and bright-green)
could it be fixed using some kind of auto-feathering?

this also once again drags attention to the issue with the Replace Color Brush / Finger Paint Brush...

Maybe "Replace Color" isn't the right tool here (because it doesn't use soft transitions). I'd probably use a green layer (possibly in mode "Color" and a layer mask generated by "Select Colors" (which has soft transitions), or a Color Filter. Works well if you colorise a black-and-white photograph. Maybe you'd like to post the original image, then it's easier to advise.

In photographic images you schould replace the Color with the Color/Saturation Filter wich offers soft transitions. Replace Color is not suitable for photografic images.

The correct name is "Hue/Saturation" (Tool > Color > Hue/Saturation). Aside from that you are of course right: "Hue/Saturation" is the better function for this kind of task.

You're again using "replace colors" for your task, even though it creates hard selections?

Maybe we could help if you post a link to the picture you want to change, describe what you want to achieve, and then we could try to find the best tools for that purpose?

Here's a quick attempt with Hue/Saturation:

A single Hue/Saturation layer didn't suffice to lighten the reds to white. Therefore I added more saturation to the reds before doing the red -> white conversion. See the attached .pld file.

yes, i tried that too, but i had the same result, would like to make it brighter though, but that would require masks etc.

so, replace color should have been able to do this, but it's not there yet...
unfortunately haven't found any good / fast solution so far...

the problem is artists rely on this function a lot, and the hue-hack gets even trickier when replacing color-areas...

it should be a "quick" fix for the programers, but i guess so goes for many other functions...

If you want it still lighter, just add another hue/saturation adjustment before to brighten the reds even more. There are limits, though – you'll lose some contrast in the whites.

Don't underestimate the problem. It's a highly nontrivial task to find out which colours to replace and by what (and the rules might vary). I'd probaby use "Colour Filter" to create an automatic mask and use it to blend in a lighter/desaturated copy of the image.

This is no easy task. I searched for tutorials on the internet. Non of them used replace colors. Hue/saturation, curves, selections and layer masks seems to be the tools to do it. And lots of work.

I tried it for small part of the image. This image is extra difficult, because you can't create masks out of it. So I used the curve creation tool to outline it and turned it into a selection and finetuning with the brushtool on a layer mask.

actually, to get it to look like what you tweaked there, you'd have to use the same method in Photoshop.

still looking for a way to make it better though.

PhotoLine doesn't seem to replace / select color ranges very well at the moment.
maybe i'll post a PhotoShop example on replace color later on, and PhotoShop select color range.

There's a nice tool in the current beta, the hue editor, that did this in 2 clicks.

Otherwise I would have tried to create a layer mask from the reds and use it on a white layer to overlay the picture. But I really had quite some trouble this way. I had the best results in selecting with the channel mixer, output grey, input 170/0/-170 and additional curves for the result. But still I had to desaturate reds.
