Looking at the announcement, I'm offering congratulations too. it looks like v.18 has some excellent new and improved features and operations, and while I dislike dark environments generally, I think the Hubers might have struck a good balance with their gray.

I'll be on the bus to the store to buy a bunch of prepaid credits this morning as soon as the rain stops (a foretaste of the wet season after a messy dry season), then I'll have to wait until after 7pm to download -- it is a lot cheaper here in paradise between 7pm and 7am and the 3G wireless dongle I am using tends to run a lot faster at that time too. Which, of course, has me quietly thanking the Hubers for their conning code which minimizes the size of the app while maximizing the functionality.

The minute 7pm ticks past, I'll hit the "go" button and then it will be "Saturday night, play time!" as I try to work through the new stuff. The problem is remembering it next day, of course!

I'll also be mentioning this new version on the DPReview m43 photo forums I'm on, and in one or two other places. It is remarkable how firmly fixed people can get to limited/expensive apps and how difficult it is to unpick their little fingers and get them to look at something better. Particularly irritating are P'shop addicts who you know just dabble at the edges (as do I in many respects compared with the real power users on this list) but who will moan and groan and pay Adobe's price because they think more expensive is better.

@GreenMorpher: Completely agree! People have a tendency to compare Photoline with Photoshop elements or Pixelmator, while the feature set really compares to Photoshop (minus the Extended stuff" 3d and video). Certain key areas such as the layer system in Photoline runs circles around Photoshop.

I have posted the news on a couple of forums as well, like CGTalk and BlenderArtists.

On a positive note, I noticed that Photoline gets mentioned much more on the net since about 7 or 8 months. I mean, even CGChannel mentioned it today!

Good work, Herbert. So far, I have mentioned it so far on a couple of very small lists, the remnant Canvas users lists, and woven it into a discussion on upgrade numbering on the official Nisus Writer Pro forum!

I’ll add it to the DPReview m43 and Mac forums tonight (if I have enough credit left -- I accidentally downloaded another program of 40MB without realizing I was duplicating a download from a couple of days ago, and I have a skinny little prepaid wireless dongle for internet connection so that took a bit out of the credit I had bought for PL, forgetting how small the download is).

Anyway -- onward! I'll have to wait for the number but I can hardly complain about that -- I do manual downloads of my little advertising book on the internet because I had endless (expensive) trouble with the automated responder -- but in the meantime, I will play a bit.

And yes, you’re right about the lowly comparisons. Part of the problem is the small price, and that is compounded by the small size of the download. People think "you get what you pay for" so they expect a quality item will carry a high price, and then they see the small size of the download and don’t realize that Adobe apps are written in BLOAT.

Has anyone noticed an increase in pirated versions of Photoline on the web lately? I did. I guess Photoline is becoming more popular now, and that's the price for being "more famous".

If even 60 bucks are too much for that impressive feature set, I dare to predict that people who make use of a pirated versrion are not willing to pay any amount for any software at all ...

PhotoLine is just what was needed to begin cracking the Adobe wall. Excellent value for the money. I was instantly happy with it the first time it opened. Now if they will just make the Rectify Tool more user friendly per greenmorpher's ideas.

I wasn't looking at all for pirated versions - I just googled Photoline in Google with the time limit set to last month to check for Photoline related news, and a bunch of pl18 hack sites came up. That's the first time that happened - never did before.

And I concur: if people aren't willing to pay, they will download anything hacked in sight. And often just for their "collection" - no real damage done, because that type of (male) person generally will not really make use of the software as it is.

That last statement is true, I believe, but even if only a relatively small number of people who download the hacked version do become users then there is important income lost to the authors. This makes me angry -- particularly when those like the Hubers who actually provide the goods at a very cheap price, are effected.
