Bug: 3D Body effect on text

Post by photoken »

Using:
Win7 x64
PhotoLine 18.01

Problem:
When the 3D Body effect is applied to text, the extrusion only shows the bottom surface. It's as if the top surface is transparent.

Here's the original text character:
3D Text initial.png
Here's the 3D Body effect applied to the text character. (The result is the same if the text layer is first converted to a vector layer.):

If I first draw a vector object, the result is as expected:

The path is "inside-out" because of the direction of the path. When you convert that character to a path (vector), and use the Edit Vector Points tool, the tool settings include an option to invert the direction of the path.

It's quite strange this happened to a font, though - what font family did you use?

Btw, Photoline's 3d body tool is very, very limited - if you need more control Blender (open source) or a commercial 3d app will offer full control - at a cost of usability and speed, of course. Another alternative is a logo-oriented tool like Aurora 3d Logo and Text creator.

I also tried Zaxxwerks Invigorator Photoshop plugin in Photoline, but is sadly crashes.

Aha! 123, that question led me to the specifics of the problem -- the bizarre result is only occurring with Adobe's "Pro" fonts. The sample I posted used Caslon Pro, and the problem also occurs with Garamond Pro. A spot check of other fonts on my system shows the 3D Body effect working as expected:
3D Text OK.png
I never expected font sources to yield such different results.... :?

Thanks for the pointers to those other extrusion tools. I almost never need to create that effect, so for now I'll simply use what PL has.

Added:
Out of curiosity, I tried extruding the Caslon Pro text with CorelDraw X5 (about three years old) and Illustrator CS2 (about 8 years old) and the extrusion worked just fine in those apps....

Correct, I was able to replicate the same problem. I think this is a bug - I'll report it in the beta users forum.

Btw, it can be resolved by converting to a vector. and then inverting the direction of each path. But we do lose text editability then.

Oh, man, don't get me started anticipating the next version(s)!

Seriously, though, that bug with the Wacom tablet is more important to me....

You know, you can get access to the beta version - instant new features. And help squashing bugs :-)

I agree - the Wacom bug is annoying while painting. Hopefully it does get fixed soon.
