Crop (and other tools) presets

Hallo, i would like that you put in Photoline crop tool some common aspect ratio presets (16:9, 4:3 and so on), like found in other graphic programs. Or tell me how to achieve that results.

You can define your own presets in the "Tool Settings" pane – enter the desired size in the text boxes, then click the icon in the top right corner to save the settings as a preset as usual. Your presets will appear in the "Presets" drop-down menu.

Rather than 4:3 or 16:9, you'll want to use something like 1200 px x 900 px and 1600 px x 900 px, resp. The crop tool will retain the ratio if you shrink/enlarge the selection using the layer handles at the corners.

Absolutely. I have mentioned this before. This is a constant PITA for me. You can't just set 1200x900 -- you also have to add a resolution.

Further, you might want to crop the existing picture at its existing longest dimension to a different standard format than the one you shot it in. Having he common ratios available would be dead simple, I should think. They should be available.

There are ratios available when using the selection tool but I have never managed to set them up to drive the selection. They just seem to be a read out. Not only that, they do not include two of the common formats: 4:3 and 16:9. 16:10 is there1 WTH?

Seems useless.

And regarding resolutions -- 144 should be there too. It is common to use it on the internet now to accommodate Retina screens.

Yes, this is true if you have your selection scaled to 1200x900 instead of just cropping to a 4:3 ratio. I don't quite understand why the resolution setting bothers you – in most cases, you can just ignore it, or you can create a preset, and it will be set along with the crop dimensions.

There are ratios available when using the selection tool but I have never managed to set them up to drive the selection. They just seem to be a read out.

You'll have to either set "proportional mode" in the tool settings or hold down the shift key while dragging the lasso.

Agreed. Also 9:13 seems useless to me. You can add your own custom ratios – there's a text file called LassoRatio.txt in the Defaults folder somewhere inside the PL folder (OS X: open package contents, go to Contents -> Resources -> Defaults). Make a copy of that file and put it in the PhotoLine Preferences folder (where your Photoline.xml is) and add/delete lasso ratios as you please. Next time you start PL, you'll have that list of lasso ratios instead of the default one. Not terribly user friendly, but otoh, you probaby only need to do this once and for all.

If I am scaling a picture, I almost always want specific resolution. I don't want to dump any old resolution into either an internet low rez) or a print (hi rez) document.

Yeah, I keep forgetting that. Sigh. Why do I have to? If I have selected a ratio, it should not require another action. There should be a null selection/position in the ratio list, that would take care of that.

Where on earth did these weird ratios come from?

But we still get back to the situation where I can't simply set up a preferred ratio with the cropping tool. I can with the selection tool,why on earth not with the cropping tool? Why not have the same facilities available in the cropping tool as in the selection tool? The same! That's all!
