Shadow on a new layer ?

Beitrag von Pierre »

Hello,
Very good soft ! :D
Sorry about my poor english langage.
If I apply a shadow on a picture, can I have the shadow on a new layer, like Gimp, and not on the same layer ?

Oddly, it seems that natively, PL does not put the shadow on a new layer. I say this is odd because PL is the king of layers -- everything is layers except shadows, it seems.

I would urge the Brothers to make shadows separate layers!

Of course, if you create your own shadow instead of using the shadow tool you can put it on a separate layer.

Cheers, Geoff

Here us a work-around: duplicate the layer, and select the bottom version. Then apply the shadow layer effect. In the layer effect settings, check "hide original". This hides the content, and leaves the shadow.

However, I would love to be able to render all the layer effects to individual layers. I have asked for such an option before, and I will request it once more.

Ok, thank's for your replies.
I'll use your tip, Herbert. :D

But this feature is missing, imo. Any plan ?

I guess it is solved this way because of the compatibility to photoshop, where you have the shadow as layer style.
If you don't create a duplicate layer but a virtual duplicate, then the shadow is changing automatically to your actual layer.

Sounds good to me, too. I don't require this very often at all, but sometimes it is easier to deal with the composite layered image if the layer effects/styles can optionally be created on their own layer.

Hi,

I just made a small action. This creates a copy of the selected frame, then pauses to set the shadow-options (like colour, position and hide or not (this in case you turned this off or on yesterday)). After that it groups this and the parent frame. The result is one frame with a separate shadow. You can manipulate the shadow separately or together with the parent frame.

I've tried removing the "group layers", because the background was white using the action.
