I also have the problem of no previews of PLD files in Windows Explorer after installing PL19.

I have the FastPictureViewer Codec installed, and when I was using PL18.53 and PL19rc3 Windows Explorer showed the previews and thumbnails for icons.

Before installing PL19.00, I first uninstalled 18.53 and the beta, answering "Yes" to the prompt to remove the DLL. Then I rebooted and installed PL19.00.

Nothing I've done has restored the previews and thumbnails, including deleting the System image cache. :(

This is on Win7 x64 SP1.

I installed v19 over the the rc3 one. I have not uninstalled the older 18.53 version, though. My thumbnails still work, and I also have fastPictureViewer Codec on my system. Perhaps reinstall FPVcodec?

What probably happened is that installing the new thumbs dll by Photoline overwrote the one of FPV, and when you uninstalled PL, the registry entry for pld files was completely removed.

Maybe, but I don't see why that should be the case: First of all, there should be absolutely no conflict between the DLLs used by FPV and PL, so uninstalling one should not affect the other physical DLL on the drive. Secondly, this never happened with the earlier betas and release candidates of PL -- in those cases whatever registry entries are used by FPV were unaffected. My procedures were the same except for uninstalling PL18.53 this time, which did not have the DLL or registry entry, anyway.

FPV won't repair or re-install over an existing installation, so I've uninstalled FPV. Now, I'll uninstall PL19.00 and reboot. Then I'll install FPV, check that it's working OK, and install PL19.00. That should tell me if the PL19.00 installation code is botched.

As a side note, since I uninstalled FPV, I did a test and installed Sage Thumbs. ST worked as it should, but it's not a viable solution for me because it doesn't provide previews for many file formats I have, and it does not utilize the Windows Explorer preview pane. So, for me, FPV is a must-have and PL must work with it.

OK, this test confirmed that the PL19.00 installation breaks the FPVcodec. Only by de-registering the PhotoLineHandlers64.DLL is the PLD preview re-enabled in Windows Explorer. I'll be filing a bug report on this in the General Discussion forum.

You can think and do what you want. Fact is, that you are the only one with this problems and I will remove "Bug" from the title.

Fine, but
  • The problem was first reported here by franky68.
  • How do you explain the behavior I noticed after an absolutely clean installation of PL19.00? (No leftover DLLs on the drive before installing.)
  • How do you explain that un-registering PhotoLineHandlers64.DLL restores the FPV functionality?
  • Have you tried to reproduce this?

Ken, I will repeat the same steps tomorrow, and see if I can reproduce this issue.

Cool. See my post in the General Discussion forum for a little fuller description of the steps. I think the key thing is to not have that PhotoLineHandlers64.DLL either registered or existing on disc or in the system cache-- IOW, when you uninstall PL, answer "Yes" to the prompt to remove it and then reboot before installing PL19.00.

well, I guess Ken and me do not have exactly the same problem - other that PL does not display thumbs. But opposite to him I do not have (or want) FPV codec installed and rather would have PL take care of displaying the thumbs...

Today I tried installing PL19 on my wifes computer (Win8 64bit) and on my old laptop (XP SP3 32bit) and neither of them could be convinced to display thumbs in windows explorer. Either I am doing something terribly wrong or there is inded a problem with the driver.

Just to get this right: I am suppoed to install PL19 an should be able to see PLD files with a preview in the windows explorer without any further steps (apart from the icon cache)? Am I (an Ken) the only one having issues?

Hi,

I had trouble with the thumbnails as well and was able to solve the problem: http://www.pl32.com/forum31/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4743
