When creating a new layer

Beitrag von Alan9940 »

It seems that all the settings I typically use in this dialog are sticky, except for "Use Transparency"; it's always checked and I usually want it unchecked. Is there any way to make "Use Transparency" sticky to my last use? Or, perhaps a preferences setting?

Thank you, once again, for any help provided.

Best regards,
Alan

I haven't found a way to do it. Sounds like an excellent feature request -- it's got my vote to remember the last used. :)

Yes, I think it can be eeeeeasily done....

"New Layer" copies the settings from the active layer and activates transparency.
Theres at the moment no way to create a new layer without transparency with this function.
Why do you need new layers without transparency?

In many cases, if you want to use the layer with a blending mode other than "normal", you don't need transparency. Instead, you'd want to start with a layer filled with the neutral colour.

Maybe it's not even the existence of an alpha channel that matters but the fact that the fill colour has no effect once "transparency" is active.

Cheers

What about only just remembering the last changes?

Perhaps this could be a new point in Options -> Working -> Special (next to "Create new layers at the top")? I mostly use layers with transparency, so this is "the next cry" ;-)

What about the following: Always fill with the chosen fill colour, and automatically turn on transparency only if the fill colour has transparency. Use the previous transparency setting if the fill colour is solid.

To have a transparent layer, I'd then have to choose a transparent fill colour, and if I need layers without transparency, for the first layer I have to make sure I have chosen a solid fill colour and transparency is off.

Or, maybe even simpler, remove the transparency switch completely, and create a layer with/without transparency depending only on the chosen fill colour.

Cheers

Burkhard.

Please, keep it simple !
Otherwise, nobody will understand the logic behind ...
Will be difficult to understand why sometimes new layer will come without transparency.

I would always create new layers with transparency, > most frequent need.

Hi Gerhard,

My primary use of a new layer is to tone B&W images. I create the new layer with a solid color, and then change the blending mode to Color. I see a lot of good suggestions in this thread, but I'd be happy if the "Use Transparency" checkbox would simply remember my last setting; as all the other settings in this dialog seem to. Seems odd to me that this single parameter is the only one in this dialog that doesn't work that way.

Alan

Hi Alan,

why don't you use a vector-layer for toning your images? Layout -> Vector -> Fit in Vector Layer. Saves much RAM. Do you see any disadvantages?

Mostly because I know nothing of vector layers, but I will try your suggestion. Thanks!

Re: When creating a new layer

One of the features I liked about PhotoShopElements was that its new layer creation dialog allowed choosing the Blend Mode of the new layer. That was nice enough, but what really made it convenient was that for blend modes that had a "neutral" colour capability, choosing one of those blend modes would activate a checkbox to optionally fill the new layer with the neutral colour of the blend mode.

For example, choosing a blend mode of "Overlay" would allow creating the layer and filling it with a 50% gray.

I didn't often use that feature, but when I did it was incredibly convenient -- I never can remember what the neutral cololur is for all the blend modes....

Hi Ken,

I use this technique all the time in PS for dodging/burning.
