Req: Filename as layer name when importing into active layer

Beitrag von photoken »

When using File...Import...Image into Active Layer, it would be a great help if the incoming filename (without extension) were used as the layer name.

This would be the same behaviour as when copying an image and pasting as a layer.

I am not sure if this is what most users want.
If you have a document with a "preset layer", where different images should be inserted, I would name this layer "preset" or "load here" and don't want to replace this layer name when importing.

I ran into this issue in the specific case of combining monochrome astrophotography images into an RGB image.

The monochrome images have long, complex names such as:
ngc2359_041212_5i25m_B.tif
ngc2359_041212_5i25m_G.tif
ngc2359_041212_5i25m_R.tif
ngc2359_041212_10i50m_L.tif

One of the methods I'm testing is to open the B image, create a new, empty layer and import the G image into that new layer; repeating the process for the remaining images. The requested feature would give me layers that are automatically named for their colour so I immediately know which Color Mixer settings (and blend mode) to use for each layer.

I can appreciate the case where a user might create a new layer, give it a new name, and want to import multiple images into it and not want the imports to change the layer's name.

With the current behaviour, I'll just have to rename each new layer as soon as I create it to something like "G", "R", and "L", which isn't so bad....

Just out of curiosity: why don't you use "Load Layer …"? Do they have different sizes?

Cheers

Oooowww! Because I never thought to drill down on that menu. That gives me the layer names I want -- thanks for the tip.

There are some very slight differences in ease of use: Once I've changed the first background image from "Monochrome" to "RGB", then creating new layers automatically creates them as RGB layers for importing. "Load Layer" means I have to manually change each loaded layer to "RGB", which is not a big deal....
