Hoogo - I do get in an upside down twist about this (!) - I can only 'explain' by saying the masks are 'adding' to the 'cumulative' effect, but you are of course absolutely right in the that overall effect is more (in my confusing terminology added) grey/black means more of the AL's effect is removed (subtracted). If the first mask subtracts say 33% of the effect, the second subtracts 33%, then where they intersect 66% (not sure the maths is that simple) of the effect will be subtracted.
Thankfully I have managed to stay away from confusing myself with subtractive colour/CMYK - I 'grew up' with RGB. If I added (or perhaps I mean subtracted) CMYK to my everyday thinking my head would probably explode (or maybe I mean implode?).
