For example, open a colour image and duplicate the colour layer. Then use the Gray Mixer to convert that duplicated layer to B&W with all the sliders at "zero". Then set the blend mode of the B&W layer to "Luminance". You will see absolutely no difference to the image.
Is this still the case on WIndows? The Mac version uses always used the L channel (of the Lab colour space) which gives a much more natural rendition than Luminance (Y). If I remember correctly, the developers planned to change the Windows version accordingly. (If you need the Y channel on OS X, add a grey layer in mode "Colour", or mix the Y channel using the Channel mixer.)

All in all, imo the Grey Mixer is very similar to the Hue Editor in Lab mode, just with different controls. If you need more "punch" for the Grey Mixer, you'll have to increase saturation beforehand (preferably using Curves in order not to push already saturated colours too far).

Tried this on both Windows and Mac and it works the same on both platforms. True, I don't see any color shift, but a slight brightness change is easily seen if you toggle on/off the B&W layer.

The difference is most obvious for the sRGB primary colours:
L vs. Y channel.png
With the greyscale adjustment layer (with all sliders set to 0), I get the greyscale conversion at the top, using the Y channel gives the conversion at the bottom.

In real world pictures, the difference usually isn't very big (after all, Y is a poor man's version of L, dating from the time when computers weren't as powerful).

Uh oh...something's changed, then. Not good. :(

Added:
The only way I've found to get this to work is to use the Hue Editor in "RGB" mode and set the Saturation to zero.

Yes, I think it can be eeeeeasily done....

OK, I've added a couple of finishing touches:
Experiment 05 c final layers.png
  • A Light/Shadow adjustment layer to slightly open up the shadows.
  • A Curves adjustment layer with increased contrast. Then I painted on the mask of this layer to slightly apply it just to areas of the sunlit cliff faces.
  • A High Pass layer to slightly sharpen things.
All in all, not bad:
Experiment 05 c final.jpg
I'm pleased that although the sunlit cliff face and the yellow tree are emphasized, there's still a nice distinction between their values, with the tree being dominant.

Hey Ken,

I really like that last version you posted...truly a very nice job! FWIW, in the print of this image I have hanging on my living room wall I darkened the tree to the right of the bright central tree which further adds to the impression of light glancing off the rock face and illuminating that tree. Try it and see what you think.

Kind regards,
Alan

Yeah, that certainly emphasizes the tree, but then I see more and more areas to darken  and pretty soon I've got the whole thing unbalanced.
