Transparent gradient on a mask

Did I missed something which changed?

I want to make an image half transparent with a gradient.

What I did:
I copied an image on my workspace with a green shape.
I created a mask on the image, paint a waveline in black and deleted the image right that spot.
Then I filled the mask with gradient "black to transparent".
The goal is to delete the black parts an leave the rest as is.

Now PL creates a new vector layer on the mask (and somewhere else also) and don't delete/make transparent.
Was this behaviour also in the past???
Did I missed a change of behaviour or what I'm doing wrong?

There's a button in the options of the gradient tool that toggles between current and new layer.
