IPTC and MakerNotes

Beitrag von arangast »

Hello,

I've come across a little issue how Photoline handles metadata.

1. On exporting an image it is completely removing the IPTC section. It is adding equivalent XMP tags (By-line -> Creator etc) but there is still software that only reads the IPTC tags (XnViewMP for example), meaning compatibility is being lost.

2. Several tags from the MakersNotes section are also being stripped out, in particular the "Internal Serial Number" which results in exiftool throwing errors when parsing. Here's an example:

Before photoline:
---- MakerNotes ----
Version : 0130
Internal Serial Number : FFDT21813294 593330303734 2013:11:01 24F030212597
Quality : NORMAL
White Balance : Auto
Saturation : High
White Balance Fine Tune : Red +0, Blue +0
Noise Reduction : n/a
Fuji Flash Mode : Off
Flash Exposure Comp : 0
Macro : Off
Focus Mode : Auto
Focus Pixel : 961 491
Slow Sync : Off
Picture Mode : Manual
Auto Bracketing : Off
Sequence Number : 0
Blur Warning : None
Focus Warning : Good
Exposure Warning : Good
Dynamic Range : Standard
Film Mode : Classic Chrome
Dynamic Range Setting : Auto (100-400%)
Min Focal Length : 18
Max Focal Length : 18
Max Aperture At Min Focal : 2
Max Aperture At Max Focal : 2
Auto Dynamic Range : 200%
Faces Detected : 1

After photoline:
---- MakerNotes ----
White Balance : Auto
Saturation : High
Noise Reduction : n/a
Fuji Flash Mode : Off
Macro : Off
Focus Mode : Auto
Focus Pixel : 961 491
Slow Sync : Off
Picture Mode : Manual
Auto Bracketing : Off
Sequence Number : 0
Blur Warning : None
Focus Warning : Good
Exposure Warning : Good
Dynamic Range : Standard
Film Mode : Classic Chrome
Dynamic Range Setting : Auto (100-400%)
Auto Dynamic Range : 200%
Faces Detected : 1

Is there any way to have Photoline pass through all tags it hasn't changed from the source image?

I appreciate this might not interest a lot of people, but I like to keep as much metadata intact for archiving purposes.

Thanks.

We remove IPTC and save XMP because IPTC is gone, there is no way around.
You are wrong, PhotoLine doesn't touch Maker Notes. It just copies it.

Well I guess I can understand the IPTC thing, although there is still plenty of software that reads it.

The issue with MakerNotes is happening though. There's no problem opening a jpg and exporting but if I load a tiff then export as jpg several of the MakerNotes tags can no longer be read.

The exiftool documentation gives a reason why this might be happening:
http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exi ... q.html#Q15

tl;dr it's not enough to just copy the MakerNotes, there are offsets within it used as pointers and these need to be updated too. Unfortunately the suggested fix using exiftool is unable to resolve them for me.
