Moving a layer without moving the selection?

Beitrag von Herbert123 »

Perhaps a silly question, but I can't seem to find an option to move a bitmap layer, without moving the selection as well.

I came up with a workaround: create a group of the bitmap layer, and then move the group. This will avoid the selection from repositioning itself. Ungrouping the group fixes the selection again.

However, would anyone know of a simpler and more direct method to accomplish this? Or perhaps a toggle to switch the behaviour when moving bitmap layers?

If you mean without moving the lasso, how about first converting the lasso to a layer? After all the moving is done, you can convert the layer back to a lasso, if you need to.

Yes, I think it can be eeeeeasily done....

Yes, your method works as well. It is similar to my group workaround, but potentially saves time when multiple bitmap layers have to be repositioned. It would be nice if the lasso options would have a toggle to switch between the two behaviours.

It is no biggie, though. I was working on a comp today, and I wanted the lasso to stay put, and move the bitmap layers around underneath. Of course, Photoline moves the lasso when any bitmap layer is moved, unless that bitmap layer happens to reside in a group, and the group itself is repositioned.

Thanks for the input - that will prove helpful.

I found an even simpler way -- click the "Edit Mask" button in the Toolbox. The mask/lasso won't move when the bitmap layer moves. When you're finished moving, just de-activate the "Edit Mask".

Awesome, going into edit mask mode keeps it in place - with a neat visual preview. Three options now!
Thanks!

I discovered yet another method: if we reposition the bitmap layer with the positional values in the layer properties, the lasso also stays put.

And one more happy accidental discovery: if we use the (<ctrl>)<shift><arrow keys>, the lasso scales with the bitmap layer.

I keep discovering little new workflow enhancers. If the ctrl key is held down, and I scale a bitmap layer, new canvas is added (or scaling down, the layer is cropped). I never knew we could do that.

*edit* Makes sense, though: I was aware of the ctrl-drag an area to create a new layer with that size.
