Vectorializing with single line

Is there a way to vectorialize images like this:

with a single spline instead getting a hatch?
Any other idea, how I can obtain a single spline design, without buying other softwares?

I'd fill the design with black (flood fill/bucket tool, this only works because there are no single lines), then convert the resulting b/w graphics to a vector layer with PL and set the fill colour to transparent. You may want to use "Optimize Vector Layer" command to smoothen the curves.
