References to Krita as external

Beitrag von Lundberg02 »

In several threads I have seen references to using Krita as an external editor. How is this possible if you are running PL on a Mac? I have an Ubuntu virtual machine in Fusion with Krita installed and am about to update Ubuntu and Krita. If I am able to do this, it will be a big motivator to get me to grind through the process.

Wait: you have Photoline installed on the Mac side, and Krita running in a virtual Ubuntu machine? And you want to use the external link function in Photoline to open Krita in your virtual machine?

I would be very surprised if this were possible. How do you expect to create an external app link between two separately running operating systems? Even if Photoline were able to access the Krita executable on the Ubuntu side, it would try to run it as a mac executable. I cannot see this working at all.

The latest alpha already runs better on a Mac - albeit that the devs are still working on improving that version.

No, I didn't think it was possible, that's why I asked. Are you saying that Krita is being ported to Mac? That's really good news.
Edit: I just did what I should have done before posting my question. I have downloaded Krita 2.9.2 for Mac, and I found the donation site to support them.
Krita was the only real reason for having an Ubuntu VM.

A newer version (2.9.9) is available here:
https://krita.org/item/krita-3-0-first-alpha-release/

On Mac a couple of OpenGL related issues still exist - those will be ironed out by version 3.

Apologies, my mistake: I opened an older version. The actual version I am running is the latest 3.0 alpha, which may be downloaded from that page.

123,

Since I'm not going to deal with the alpha, other than the changes listed on that page (which seem rather minor) have you found any new "Wow!" stuff in it?

Can you check if the animation options are available in your version? The layer panel got a complete revamp, and was much improved. Many other new features in version 3 are available as well. The version number is 2.99.89.

I don't do animations, but couldn't find anything to do with them in my version.

So, nothing new that's spectacular?

… which means that for most painting tools, you don't see the cursor. The "Dream …" G'MIC filter also crashes the instance you try to select it. Very much an alpha version, it seems. Imo, it's better to wait until it reaches beta stage.

Cheers

Apple is known for its rather dire opengl drivers nowadays (unfortunately). Developers in general are encountering these type of issues.

2.9.11 is taking more than a half hour to download. 2.9.2 took only a short time. Did they add that much to it? Since 3.0 will come out by May 1, I don't think I'll download the alpha. I've got plenty of other problems, like the Samsung T3 SSD I bought after doing what I innocently thought was plenty of online research, and the Epson I bought that had clogged nozzles right out of the box, and finding a replacement for a failed RAID disk.

There are many improvements in version 3 - for example, an instant preview mode, which allows for real-time lag-free painting with complex brushes even at high resolutions. It calculates the full effects in the background while you paint.

That is pretty impressive to experience in and by itself. Of course, at extreme levels it will still slow down.

Somewhere on the Krita website you can find a list of new features for each released alpha. Animation is naturally a VERY big new feature for most users (myself included). I wish Photoline would have a similar timeline. But I am fine with Krita and ClipStudio now both offering very good frame-by-frame animation tools.

Btw, I use the animation tools often as a versioning tool as well: when I am satisfied reaching a certain state, I create a new keyframe which holds the new version, and continue my work. This way I can always go back to a previous version quickly.
