Where are the print registration marks stored?

The default registration marks and crop marks used when exporting to PDF are a little...thick:

I'd like to experiment with using something a bit more elegant:

Can I do that by simply substituting my registration mark for the default one somewhere?

no, they can't be replaced.
I think about removing this function completely because I know nowadays no reason why people use it.

Please keep the function. It does no harm, and there is always a chance that a project will require printing on transparent film which will need to be aligned.

If you want to print your document by a printing company, they won't use your markers. Normally they print on big papers and place several print jobs on this paper. The placement and the cutmarkers is done by them.

Yes, I understand. I'm thinking of self-produced projects such as prototypes and comprehensive layouts, etc. Perhaps even films used as masks for etching.

Please keep the cut marks!
I run a smaller printing company and I would have to change my whole printing workflow, which is based upon these cut marks. I use them dozens of times a day. PhotoLine is my main production software tool, from designing through changing and optimizing images and PDFs to the export in PDF (always with cut marks) to the printing process, sometimes with impositioning done in PL.
One of the strong points of my company is the flexibility. And the marks that come with the document show my printing and cutting machines what to do with every individual job.
Also, I urge my customers (most of them good-willing amateurs) to add their own cutmarks if possible, so it is clear to me what they want.

Along with this, I also request the addition of dashed marks (as well as dashed guide lines when editing) to show where the folds should be.

In your work, would you see a benefit to using the more precise registration mark I showed, as well as somewhat thinner but sharper cut lines?

not so much the registrationmarks, but thinner cut lines would be very welcome, and these lines preferably surrounded bij a small white outline. In that way they would be (more) visible on a dark (black) background.
I can see the registration by the cut lines though the paper.

I agree with everyone here: please keep the registration marks. As a matter of fact, I would also prefer to see more options implemented to control the marks more precisely.

By the way, you've been arguing for a long time to get multiple, controllable guide layers, and I now see the benefit of that: When working on a document that will have folds (such as a brochure), I'd really like to have a set of guidelines for the folds that are dashed and in a less obvious colour than the other guidelines. This also would require an additional set of dashed crops in the margin, as I mentioned earlier.

the cutmarker width and the registration marker width (it's always the same) can be changed with an registry entry in the "Settings" of PhotoLine. Setup a new value "CutMarkerWidth" (default is 50).
Here you can setup a "CutMarkerLength", too. The default value is 100.

Glad to see you have arrived at the same conclusion!

Ideally guides would just be part of a specific layer - easy to manage that way. Hide the layer hides the guides on that layer. That is how I worked in InDesign and Illustrator. And why not allow any (vector) shape to be converted to a guide? I would love to have diagonal and round guides.

Absolutely not! Guides must be independent of the layers -- when working on a piece that will be printed, I need to see the bleed and live matter guides at all times, regardless of which layer is visible or not.

That would be interesting, although the current method of using those vector shapes on their own "guide" layer works well enough for me....
