Yep, yet another thread on Sharpening

Beitrag von Alan9940 »

Sorry, all, but I have to ask...

We all know that sharpening is basically the enhancement of the light/dark sides of an edge. I have a filter on the Windows platform (never ported to Mac) that does a very nice job of sharpening IMO because the dark side is enhanced more than the light side. Quite a different look compared to standard USM sharpening. Does anyone know of a PL action that would perform sharpening in this manner? Is there a whiz-bang plugin around that I should know about?

Thank you.

Well if I were to do it, I'd sharpen the image to the extent you want the dark edge sharpened. Then copy that and paste it over the pre-sharpened image and set its blend mode to darken. Then duplicate that layer and set it's blend mode to lighten, and last set the amount to 50% (adjust the amount to your preference.) Oh, and of course you can record these steps as an action. Done.

Here's an example . . .

Do you want to sharpen for web display (which size in px), or for print (print size)?

Sharpening for print. I typically make prints from about 5x7" to about 17" on the long edge at 300 ppi or 360 ppi, depending on which printer I'm using.

Thanks, HTH. That action you posted does exactly what I want to do.

Hi Alan9940,

Glad you find the action useful. By the way, HTH stands for "Hope This Helps", it's not my moniker. My alias is Pixel8tor.

Take care

Also I do the sharpening in mode "darken" quite regularly.
- For normal pictures to reduce halos. In that case, I usually have 2 adjustment layers, 1 darken, 1 lighten, and use a black brush to paint halos away.
- A special case are rescaled screenshots. Usually dark writing on lighter background. Avoiding lighter halos by using darken for the sharpening layer makes the background look cleaner, especially when later the colors are reduced.

My general recipe:
- Unsharp masking, start with in size + threshold, max strength, and the difference view.
- Increase size until all things to sharpen get sharper
- Increase threshold until unwanted things disappear.
- Shift+Click preview and adjust strength.

I would advise to never sharpen in RGB, it's prone to color fringing.
