I assume Payrus Office itself works better than their webserver. Currently the german site is completely down and the downloads are not working at their english language site. I will try again later. This might be nice of for personal usage - but at work there is no way to deviate from the "standard".
That's odd. I just visited their English language site and the demos are downloading all right. You have to go to Downloads > Papyrus Demo Versions (second little section down, you choose your operating system) > Demo-Versions (ver. 12.56) > Download Papyrus (System) Demo Version (i.e. there was no reason for you to choose your operating system because both PC and Mac demos download from this one page!).

I am waiting with 'bated breath for the servers to be down because I would expect that to mean that they are launching v.13 -- they told me a few weeks ago that v.13 was imminent.

Hello!!! I just went to the German site http://www.papyrus.de and then to the download page and I see no reference to v.12.56 but a reference to v.13. Looks like they might have slid around the v.13 by calling it Papyrus 2008. Or I might be totally misunderstanding what is going on, of course.

Congratulations, seems like you found your match. :D
(Have fun memorizing the keyboard shortcuts).
Lutz, that's not really appropriate. At least the guy was doing the Hubers the courtesy of telling them what was wrong. I do marketing consultancy for small business. It would be interesting to know how many prospects slide away -- just quietly disappear without a word -- because the interface defeats them. It would also be interesting to know what proportion of PL32 owners upgrade and what proportion slip away, again for the same reason. Just frustrated by the amount they have to keep in their head -- "intensity" here means "brightness" there, "color strength" in this menu means "hue" in the other menu (and in EVERY other image editing program).

The Hubers probably don't want the feedback or what I tell them via this forum, but when I talk about following the industry standard and stuff, that is genuine, 100%, gold plated marketing advice they ought to be desperately seeking and willing to pay for, IF they want to make a decent return on their work. I have said that PL32 is a program with excellent capabilities; but time and again, the new (or even moderately experienced, as I am now) user can't access those capabilities because they are buried in a mish-mash of odd menus and interface choices. If you aren't using them every day, and most prospective users of PL32 will not, a process just gets lost again. No good looking at the manual, it won't tell you, the term used in the manual for the action you are seeking is different from the one used in the menu. No good looking for a tutorial, there isn't one. And the way to go might be quiet iillogical -- to the USER.

Look at the stuff we went through with the external shadow. Since you can't see a shadow unless the background is transparent and the window is enlarged, why doesn't that happen automatically when you specify a shadow? But a user never would have thought of those preliminary steps -- and should not have to.

Regarding naming and the general look and feel -- the little business NEVER makes the rules UNLESS it can make a totally separate niche for itself. You win by not looking too strange to customers -- you follow the industry standard generally -- but then you do something a bit different and better -- maybe 5% or 10% different -- and you build on that

Look at Google, for example. They started from nothing in a world already full of search engines. They came up with new search algorithms -- but the INTERFACE and the way that worked, was stock standard -- just like everyone else's: a text box to type stuff into and a button to click to start the search. They did make one change -- that they made it EASIER TO USE by dumping out the distracting rubbish Yahoo and the rest put on their front page. On the Google page, almost all you had was the box to enter your text and the search button.

Brilliant. The results speak for themselves. (There is more to is than that, of course, but looking industry standard and being very easy to adopt while doing stuff better was -- and is -- Google's foundation.)

I am amazed that Martin tells us how to change the names of our localizations and then see if others like them. This is checking with the wrong people. It is not the preferences of current users of PL32 that need to be addressed -- these are people who have survived the baptism of fire and finally worked their way through the maze. What needs to be addressed are the preferences of PROSPECTS who are coming from a little bit of image stuff with other programs, and are seeking to upgrade their capabilities. Their needs are simple -- industry standard nomenclature. The Hubers need to understand that, put it in place, then current users can retain their present name files if they wish.

But further -- it is not just the names of stuff in the menus. It has to run through the manual, the manual must be improved (if it had the detail it ought to have, it would be about twice as long, I calculate), and the menus must be improved. Some stuff needs to be worked over so it all happens in one dialog instead of in two or three, and so on. Two examples, the simple business of changing resolution and size -- that should be achieved in one dialog. The business with the shadows in a picture window -- the window should automatically enlarge and the background go transparent when an external shadow is specified. And here's another thought: when saving a document, provide for "save selection" so that when you have a photograph on a document (which you would do if you wanted to add a shadow to it because of the clumsy way the picture window operates in this respect) you can just select it, flatten it (reduce to one layer) THEN save off the resultant picture with shadow. This should be simple to program -- since you can reduce to one layer, then copy that and paste as a picture, then save THAT so you only have the picture.

But in that process, of course, PL32 decides that your 300 dpI picture with shadow from the document will adopt the screen resolution in the picture window (in my case, 90 dpi) and change size accordingly in the picture window. But if you flatten it all to the backgrtound, tehn select it with the lasso tool, copy it and paste it as a new document, it will retain the 300 dpi. Sigh! I just don't know where I am with resolution and size in PL32. Clearly, they are linked, they just don't look like it much of the time -- but since they ARE linked, why not have the linkages show in a dialog?

I'll refer to Canvas again -- the "Resolution" dialog is attached. You can:
* Make the resolution whatever you like, and it will change the photo size accordingly IF you check the "Preserve data" button.
* OR you can have that checked and change the size, and the resolution will change accordingly.
* OR you can uncheck that (as shown) and change the resolution or the size or both and it will redraw the picture (note: PL32 has better tools for redrawing the image than does Canvas)
* OR you can do those things and uncheck "Preserve Proportions" and change the size and the resolution and shape of the picture and it will redraw.

BY THE WAY -- what the heck is the shadow? It does not show up as a separate layer, but the only way you can copy the picture with the shadow is to "Reduce to Background Layer". At that point, the shadow has a bounding box. An image with shadow shows as a group -- but the bounding box does not incorporate part of that group -- the shadow. If you "DISSOLVE GROUP" (Industry standard, "Ungroup" unless this is something different, which it may be, but in that case, it should not be called the industry standard "Group") the shadow disappears! And it is not sitting there is a separate layer. Looks to me as though the Hubers have broken their own rules here.

PS: Please excuse the unsharp picture; I didn't take the photograph; that's me in it with my smiling wife.

Cheers, Geoff

Actually, that's my last post unless I have a query about how to do something. I'm clearly boring most people on this list, I am wasting my time, and the Hubers aren't about to do anything constructive about the interface -- they just don't give a damn.

Well, bugger them too.

Unless there is a dramatic change in their attitude, I'll just get my money's worth out of PL32 as it stands in a very limited way, and at some time in the future, switch over to one of the new Mac apps which are coming along. It might be some time before they have the capabilities of PL32, but I'll just cut my suit to fit the cloth. At least I will be able to USE what capabilities they offer rather than having to spend hours of frustration trying to make PL32 work when I know it can do the job but that the Hubers have successfully hidden the capability.

Cheers

Hello Geoff,

yes, the Papyrus website is up and running again. I will certainly try it.

I agree with many points in your long post but not so much regarding the resizing in Photoline. Did you try the latest Version?

The "scale" dialog has been completely re-done recently because of our suggestions (I did complain, too) . The power of the new dialog is just a bit hidden because of the "mode" drop-down list, but I believe once one has looked into these modes, this is actually the most powerful resample tool I have come across so far.

The two points one should ask new users to look at:
- have them look into the "modes" list
- have them right-click into the dimension boxes to easily change the units from pixels, to percents and cm's and inches

The HELP is not updated yet, as you will rightely notice. But this is a wonderful resampling tool - and I have not mentioned Lanczos-8 yet.

Perhaps the tool should better be renamed from "Scale" to "Resample"?
And the "Change Layer Size" tool actually to something like "Scale/Layer size"?
scale.png
* PS: The "Fit Square" and "Height" modus options are very useful for batch-processing.

Come on, Lutzy! Don't start me again! I switch to resolution mode, I start with a 72 dpi picture which is reported with the dimensions 62.55 x 50.10 cm. Fine. Now I set the resolution to 300 dpi. It now reports the size of the picture is 260.60 x 208.74 cm !!!

This is crazy. I didn't say I wanted a 260.60 x 208.74 cm picture -- and I DO NOT HAVE such a picture AT 300 dpi. I can see what's happening here, and it is mental. I am just not interested in talking about it. Suffice to say I specified a higher resolution, I did NOT specify bigger width and depth, but I simply did not get what I wanted.

Now, what if I want the situation of "Preserve Data" (as in the Canvas case). I don't want resampling -- I want to use the current data available to make a higher resolution picture, and I'll deal with the size issue separately. I can get that, the higher resolution and the consequent reduction in picture size, in "Layer Properties".

As I said, just mental.

Lutz -- look again at the Canvas interface which covers Layer Properties, Scale Layer and Change Layer Size all in one simple dialog (it is working in a situation of what is Document view, not Picture, always. Is there something wrong with that? The Hubers don't want more menus? They don't need half the menu items they have!

I repeat, PL32 has some excellent capabilities (and in this particular case, the choice of resampling is good, although who can be worried about "Quick" in this day and age of super powered computers?), but so often they are buried under a confusing and nonsensical interface.

But the way -- something else. When you "Reduce to One Layer" or "Reduce to Background Layer" in PL32, it is destructive. You have lost your layers. In Canvas, you "Render", which produces a new picture -- a rendering of everything that is selected, buit separate from them. The originals are preserved. In this case, there is the photo, a shadow behind it, the lettering in front, and the text shadow. All these are separate objects stacked on one layer. I select them all then go "render" -- at which point I can determikne the specifications of the final output of bringing together all these "layers". In PL32, you kind of take pot luck with the reducing or rendering, then you go around after and specify it. I think it is like that in Photoshop too, but I don't know.

Cheers

Geoff

Hello Geoff,

the options in the "scale" dialog, that are "not necessary" for single images or layers, are a real boon for example for batch processing (when I want to bring 50 images of very different sizes and aspect ratios, even mixed landscape and portrait orientation, into the proper shape for a web presentation). Much better and far less work than the PS and PSP solutions.

As you mentioned resolution changes are available in the "layer properties" in PL (should such an option be added to other dialogs?)- and the Canvas dialogs can verylikley be simpler because Canvas only knows the equivalent of the "document" mode. This works great for you - for me it did not - in fact this canvas limitation irritated me to no end when trying to use Canvas 5 years ago. My former lab had Canvas sitting around (but nobody able to make any use of it) and I even got a free copy of Canvas with a PC magazine. I tried to work with it but it certainly was not for me, despite its very enticing features (sprite effects etc.). This is a very complex scenario and every implementation necessarily has its inherent drawbacks.

Perhaps, a "Render" function, as described, could be a useful addition to PL (considering that PL can work with vectors and bitmap layers of differing resolutions)? I am guessing it would act similarly to the bitmap-export in CorelDraw. One can always ask for it and discuss it (perhaps ??? ).

Hiya Lutz

I misled you, actually -- you can't render and change the physical measurements of the image at the same time. Two steps. Render, then > Resolution (Dimensions) tool.

Canvas has scripts for batch processing. I've never used them. It has its own internal scripting language, cross platform, of some power, used extensively, I believe, in industrial applications of Canvas -- e.g. Boeing had a couple of thousand Canvas seats back in the day -- whether it still has them under ACDSystems' (mis)management is another matter.

Don't get me wrong -- I am not presenting Canvas as perfect. But where its interface is superior, I can see no reason for PL32 not to go the same way.

Looks like I've opened some old wounds :-)

I certainly agree that Photoline should be well-localized to English regardless of how poorly Photoshop may have been localized to German. I happen to be a Mathematician by training and a Photographer since I was a kid and Photoline and Photoshop are better off using PHOTOgraphic terminology than Mathematical terminology. "Histogram" = bar chart and while technically each vertical row of pixels in the Levels dialog might be considered a bar, this isn't helpful. Photoshop calls it levels. Some cameras call it levels. Others call it histogram. I'd suggest that you use both terms: Levels Histogram so it's obvious to everyone.

I'd upload my SVG and PDF but they're too big (>256kB).

Telling me to hack localization files to suit myself is silly. It's worse than giving users gigantic preferences dialogs.

While Photoshop's UI conventions might not always make sense, they are pretty consistent and people know them. Since Photoshop is the 380kg gorilla it seems that while you're trying to compete with it you should adopt its conventions where appropriate. This may not match your own sense of perfect user interface design but it's better than being purist and not selling your product.

Selection Menu and "Masks". One of the things that made Photoshop more useful than products that preceded it was the intrinsic understanding that Selections were a "first class citizen" of the user-interface. Editing bitmaps is all about selecting stuff, making exact selections, modifying selections, remembering selections. In Photoshop changes to selections are undoable. You can make a selection, edit the selected stuff, modify the selection, and continue. This is crucial. This is why Photoshop has a selection menu. Photoline has most of the functionality of Photoshop but not the realization of how central working with selections is to workflow. (Since version 3, Photoshop has added layers and realizing that these too were central, has a layer menu.)

Given how central selections are, it's important not to confuse them with masks. A mask is an alpha channel applied to a layer. A selection is something you can turn into a mask or get from a mask, but it isn't a mask.

I haven't read through all the other stuff in this thread, although I tried to skim it. In my view, organizing the menus and using consistent naming (and perhaps adding some well-chosen shortcuts) is the simplest and most useful change you could make to Photoline. Photoshop has the following menus:

Image -- stuff that applies to the entire image (e.g. color mode, or curves). Confusingly some of this stuff now only affects the current layer.
Layer -- stuff that applies to the current layer (except for some stuff that's in the Image menu to confuse people). This also includes masking functions which are layer-based. Confusingly some of this stuff affects selections.
Selection -- stuff that modifies the current selection. Confusingly, this now includes things to change LAYER selection and AREA selection (since in late model Photoshop you can work on more than one layer at a time).
Filter -- all filters are in one menu and grouped by the kind of thing they do EXCEPT for global color correction stuff which is in the Image menu. Confusingly some are grouped by historical origin (e.g. Sketch, Stylize, and Texture are a bunch of filters Adobe got when it bought Aldus, and should really be redistributed into other categories).

As you can see, I don't think Photoshop's organization is perfect, and it's also clear that some things such as "Convert Selection to Layer" have more than one obvious home. However, in Photoline there's no Selection menu and Convert Selection to Layer is under Tool > Lasso (why is "Lasso" used interchangeably for "Selection"? Again, a lasso isn't a selection, it's a tool for making selections.)

I also note -- with approval -- that Photoline supports shift / command / option for selection (shift -> add to selection, command -> subtract, option -> leave a copy behind).

Shift should also constrain drags (not option) as per my earlier remarks (option leaves a copy behind if it is down when mouse is released; shift constrains drags while it is down, it adds to a selection if it is down before the selection begins -- so there's no ambiguity).

My understanding of some words in PL:
-The mask is equivalent to a sheet of paper in airbrush. It protects part of the picture from being changed. It is a bitmap, greyscale.
-The lasso is equivalent to the border of a mask or the marching ants of PS. It is a vector, a line between pixels, though there seems to be no way to change it with the vector tools. It divides parts of the mask with less than 50% protection from those parts with more than 50%.
-A selection is a strange being somehow similar to a temporary layer. When dragging the inner parts of a lasso this selection is created according to the mask. It even appears in the layer list.

I think PS has no word for the lasso, at least "marching ants" seems quite commi, but it does not sound too official. The PS-term "selection" seems to cover PL maks/selection/lasso, and PS mask is used totally different. But I'm anything but firm with PS.

(Sorry for being so quiet in this discussion, but currently I'm totalls addicted to playing "fallout2")

Hello Lutzy

The options in the Canvas Resolution (Dimensions) dialog cover the same parameters as in the PL32 Scale Layer dialog, except that Canvas offers you the choice of specifying resolution, which PL32 does not -- you have to go to the Layer Properties dialog for that, Canvas does not offer you a Fit to Square; you would have to set up square dimensions. And, of course, Canvas does not offer a choice of interpolation types -- it has only one, albeit of good quality.

Hello Poddo

Well summarized in regard to P'shop's set out and processes (as I remember it in a dim and simpler P'shop age). As I have said elsewhere, I do not propose that P'shop's menus and approaches to everything should be adopted by PL32, but I do feel that in the basics, at least, PL32 needs to go with the elephant or get trampled to death.

And you put your finger on the Histogram vs. Levels question. The Histogram, a bar chart, which displayed, in any case, as a line graph (forgotten what that's called) (on second thought, I think "line graph" is the right term, isn't it?) is the term to describe the charting type. What we users need to know is that it is about Levels, the photographic term for the number of steps available in ... what? ... back in the black and white days, it would have been the shades of gray which could be differentiated. So we don't have a histogram, it is about levels, so what about calling it "Levels", which fits with other programs?

Etc.

Actually, you prodded something in the back of my mind, Poddo -- I've just understood for the first time, what PL32's page analog, "Document" view, is about. It is different from every other page analog view I have worked with -- it is actually just another "Picture" view in PL32 -- another layer -- which is why it comes with a resolution (present at 300 dpi). In every other program with a page analog I have worked with, the page analog is neutral, inactive -- it is part of the FILE within that program, but not part of not part of the document as it may be output, it is simply a working space with the page bounds being the bounds of output, whatever form of output that was. The document is the contents within those page bounds. I am refgerring to such programs as PgeMaker, RSG!, Quark Xpress, InDesign, Illustrator, FreeHand, Canvas, MacDraw, CricketDraw, AppleWorks, et al, to say nothing of "Page View" in numerous word processors.

Which explains, in part, why the so-called "Document" view is so confusing. And why Layers, Pages and Documents get hopelessly confused in the Layer and Layout menus, including in scaling and changing size sub-menus and some others.

Why not have a neutral document view like other layout programs and let each layer retain its own resolution, which we can adjust as we like?

Hoogo

-- Does that definition of "mask" describe an Alpha Channel mask? I like your definition of a mask, but I am not sure it is always true. Wish it were; I might be able to understand it. "Transparency mask" for example. Sigh.

-- The lasso is the tool that cuts a bit out of the picture. Border of a mask? Hmmm. Is it a vector? Does it have to be? You can change it with the vector tools is you go Menu Bar > Tool > Lasso > Convert Lasso to Layer, which will make it into a vector so you can adjust the shape, then go Tool > Lasso > Convert Layer to Lasso, to get back to working with the image and the lasso. (Canvas also does this with Menu Bar > Image > Selection to Path / Path to Selection -- but although the process is simpler, it doesn't do this as well as PL32 because in Canvas, you can't apply feathering of the selection edge to such lassos for some reason, although you can feather with the ordinary lasso tool. Further, this is bad nomenclature in Canvas, it should be "Path to Lasso" and "Lasso to Path".) Hoogo, I simply do not understand what you are saying when you say the lasso "divides parts of the mask with less than 50% protection from those parts with more than 50%". Lost me, mate!

-- The moment you move a selection, you create a new layer, but when you deselect it, it merges back into the layer from which it came. I agree, bloody confusing behaviour! Now try that in Document view, Hoogo. In Picture view, when you drag a selection it COPIES that part of the original and leaves the picture intact (or at least it is today), changing it with the merging back into it at thenew location. In Document view, when you drag the selection, is CUTS OUT that part of the picture, but when you let go, it merges back into the picture again (in the new location, as in Picture view) to make the one layer. You can't drag it outside the bounds of the picture, though, or it disappears. You can copy it, deselect the picture, then paste the copied selection outside the bounds of the picture to another part of the document. BLOODY confusing. In Canvas, moving the selection always cuts it out unless you hold down the option/alt key so that moving then copies (in the standard Mac manner). For further confusing fun, try selecting a layer and going Tool > Lasso > Convert Layer to Selection. That should keep you guessing if you have a lot of layers.

You are right about "the marching ants" thing. A very graphic description and once you have seen it, you are in no doubt about what it is, but "lasso" is as good as any, I suspect, although "Image Selector" would seem to be better in a pure image editor such as P'shop (i.e. in the Picture window in PL32) or maybe "Image Part Selector" (which describes what it does). A bit clumsy though. Of course, in the confused Document view in PL32 or the standard page view in other DTP and graphic apps, many of which have a lasso tool for cutting images down to size, you have to seelct the image with the pointer before using the lasso. Or "Image Cutting Tool". Or something.\

Sorry this is not mysterious:

A selection is a subset of an image you've selected -- just as in a word processor it's a portion of a text document you've selected. Image editors show selections using "marching ants".

A lasso is a tool for creating and modifying selections. As are various marquee tools. Photoline refers to the "lasso" select tool as a "lasso" just like every other program. Using the word "lasso" to refer to "selections" is inconsistent and confusing.

A mask hides part of an image. (I referred to it as an "alpha channel" but that's a technical term. It's a "hole" through which the image is projected, but a hole that can be varyingly transparent.) Again, Photoline uses the term "mask" to refer to masks, but also, confusingly, uses it to refer to selections.

There's no mystery or ambiguity except that which is invented by misusing the terms. A mask is not a selection. A lasso is not a selection.

---"Level Histogram" would be acceptable for me. I had some math, but not that much math that I would understand "histogram" as a kind of chart. My only contact to this word were the programs that used it for levels. On the other hand I don't know a photographic word for levels in german. Maybe zones, that's something similar, but different. All cameras I know (canon, pentax) offer a "histogram", no "levels". Maybe this all is an effect of the "gernglish" language (called Denglisch in German), A lot of english words are mixed into the language, but sometimes with altered meanings. For example a cellphone is called "Handy" here.

---I would agree that there is some mess within the menus tools/filters/effects. But others liked it.

---The idea that shadows should be part of a layer or expand the layer: I TOALLY disagree.
-It is not natural to grab an item by its shadow.
-Next the now shown handles correspond to the bitmap (with applied rotation, sheer and resizing, perspective...). It is not a simple bounding box!! I cannot imagine a task that would be easier if that is changed.
-A layer could have a 3D-shadow, but where to paint the handles that they keep their meaning?? The shadow can be anywhere, even outside the picture. And how to resize a layer by eyeview to half of its size when you add the casted shadow?
-If it is not only about the handles, but about the layer itself: An automatic expansion of a bitmap because of a shadow could be a mess. Transparency has to be enabled, filters may work differently, and what size should the layer get when the shadow is turned off?
So all in all it may be confusing for some effects, especially the 3D-Effects or distortions, that the painted layer is at different positions and with different shape than the painted handles, but I think its totally OK with the simpler effects, and I do not see advantages in changing this behaviour.

---Histogram-Outputslider, gammaslider...
-PS has these arrows below the curve. The midtone arrow is a nice thing, easier to imagine than the gamma-adjustment. I don't know how the output range is handled there.
-I think that PSP (at least 6.xx) had no arrows, but the bars like PL has, but it is really long ago, I'm not sure... It showed the curve and 2 additional "sliders" below to adjust input range and output range. I never really managed the meaning of the output bar, but I remember that I found it really much more easy when I switched to PL. I think it looked similar to canvas.
-DPP (Canon) shows a quadratic histogram with 2 vertical bars like PL for input and 2 horizontal bars for output. Somehow strange, but no bad idea.
All in all I'd say that there are many ways to display and use these levels, and the bars used in PL are not that uncommon.

---localization
It is surely no revenge if the english localization is not perfect. But when I find that Adobe translated something like "lens correction" into something like "Aperture improvement", or when I find some english sentences in a german Samsung-handbook, then it comes to my mind that "bit" bigger companies have their problems with localization.

I guess you would not ask Apple to make their OSX look more like Windows or your texteditor look more like word ;) Never used an Apple, but I heard that there is something really strange about the "@"-symbol. I agree that the most commonly used things should be comparable, you gave enough examples, google and so.
greenmorpher hat geschrieben:...BY THE WAY -- what the heck is the shadow? It does not show up as a separate layer, but the only way you can copy the picture with the shadow is to "Reduce to Background Layer". At that point, the shadow has a bounding box. An image with shadow shows as a group -- but the bounding box does not incorporate part of that group -- the shadow. If you "DISSOLVE GROUP"...
An image with shadow shows as a group? What do you mean?
When reducing to background layer or fixing a layer all the distortions, rotations, effects and so on are rendered into a new, simple layer with new pixels. That's why there appears a bounding box afterwards. Until then there is only the original bitmap, and all effects are applied "on the fly". That's also the reason why you can not paint on the effects or paint with high resolution on an extremly expanded layer. Something like the rendering in canvas looks clever to me, keeping the old layers, but create a new one.
greenmorpher hat geschrieben:...Why not have a neutral document view like other layout programs and let each layer retain its own resolution, which we can adjust as we like?...
I never used layout programs, so maybe I have some difficulty in understanding, or I just have a more "clean" view at something new... I do not see what use one can have in placing layers of different resolution (dpi) on the same page?
Before my innere eye is something like this: For me there is the reloution of a document, an on it you can place bitmaps without any size or reslution - because you can grab these layers at their handles and give them any size without having to care about resolution or quality. Only at the end, when reducing the whole stuff to one document, they all have to be converted to the dpi of the document, fixed to 300 in PL. (And please don't write too much if you want to answer me - I don't think I ever turn into a layouter ;))
greenmorpher hat geschrieben:-- Does that definition of "mask" describe an Alpha Channel mask? I like your definition of a mask, but I am not sure it is always true. Wish it were; I might be able to understand it. "Transparency mask" for example.
That depends... I once asked in another forum if "transparency channel" and "alpha channel" were synonyms. Ond some user offered a pdf containing an article from siggraph 1984, and back then they were the same. But PS uses the word for something different - a channel with no special purpose, most commonly used as something like a clipboard, with an easy option to turn these channels into a mask (my definition.of mask). What is a transparency mask?
greenmorpher hat geschrieben:I simply do not understand what you are saying when you say the lasso "divides parts of the mask with less than 50% protection from those parts with more than 50%". Lost me, mate!
The lasso is somehow glued to the mask. You cannot alter the lasso without changing the corresponding mask and vice versa. The lasso itself is just a thin line that divides inside from outside. It cannot have something like feather, feather or any percentage of covering are stored in the corresponding bitmap called mask. When you switch to the "edit mask mode" (one of the buttons with the similng faces beneath the toolbar) and use the smudgefinger on it you can create some kind of smooth transitions. The lasso will follow these changes, it always divides between >50% and less than 50% mask.
greenmorpher hat geschrieben:The moment you move a selection, you create a new layer, but when you deselect it, it merges back into the layer from which it came. I agree, bloody confusing behaviour!
I live more or less without this kind of selection and prefer creating real layers. But for some users selections are more easy, no worries about layers and stuff like that.
greenmorpher hat geschrieben:Now try that in Document view, Hoogo. In Picture view, when you drag a selection it COPIES that part of the original and leaves the picture intact (or at least it is today), changing it with the merging back into it at thenew location. In Document view, when you drag the selection, is CUTS OUT that part of the picture..,
Maybe a bug? Don't know, there is an option what the usual behaviour should be, and sometinhg with the shift-key, too... Don't remember exactly.

True -- that's bizarre, isn't it? They could just as well say "Chart" or "Graph" -- it actually would have just as much meaning. What the chart, graph or histrogram is SHOWING is what matters.
Hoogo hat geschrieben:On the other hand I don't know a photographic word for levels in german.
That is odd, isn't it, given Germany's historical place at the top of the photographic heap, both in producing equipment and in the practice of the craft (or art!) Does Agfa still exist? (I haven't bought film or paper in an age). If so, what about their site? In Australia, we call those phones "mobiles", but the way, and we think Americans are mad to call them cell phones.

Did they really? Were they offered an alternative?
Hoogo hat geschrieben:---The idea that shadows should be part of a layer or expand the layer: I TOTALLY disagree.
My problem with what PL32 gives us, Hoogo, is that a shadow is in some indefinable realm. It is not a separate layer (when PL32 boasts that EVERYTHING is a layer), it is not part of the image to which it is applied -- although if you have a shadow on text or a picture with a shadow, and you change the text or picture, the shadow changes accordingly (and this is great, I am not knocking it). But if it is part of the layer, and it appears to be (I can't find the Group/Ungroup thing this morning that I found yesterday, typical), then at least the "Picture" window should expand to show it. AND should apply the necessary transparency to do that. We ARE working with computers here, after all.

I like the arrow heads below simply because they are easy to see and grab. I don't like grabbing at the edge of boxes. Indeterminate or very small targets for mouse movement lead to long terms injuries to the hands, arms and shoulders. I know -- I suffer from them going back to the first Macs.
Thye middle slider definitely is useful. It is nothing new -- in the old days, we adjusted the middle range with a choice of media, processing and exposure. In PL32, you can adjust that in the Curves (dang, I was just getting used to CLUT) dialog. But a middle slider in the Levels dialog is a quick and dirty way to make such an adjustment.

Absolutely -- I don't defend Adobe at all. That they don't have good localisation is pathetic. Their failure is where there is an opening for smaller operations like PhotoLine to shine. The German Samsung book? That's Korean > English > German, perhaps! Translation, especially technical translation, is demands the highest skills and a lot of creativity -- and is almost universally under-appreciated.

Ummm -- Microsoft Windows was derived from the Apple Macintosh interface and Apple derived its look and feel from a Xerox interface. :D

In the "Document" view (whch I would actually prefer to call the "Page" view), it seems to me that PL32 purports to be a DTP program. Why would you want something that is not 300 dpi? Well, you might want everything to be 200 dpi or even 150 dpi because a photo will print perfectly well on newsprint at that resolution (atg 150 dpi it is on the ege, admittedly), and that will give you a much smaller file. You might want different resolutions for different elements, e.g. a photo might be fine at 200 dpi while a little logo, with fine lines in it, which really ought to be a vector graphic but someone has sent you a high resolution TIFF file of it instead and you have to use that, must go at 600 dpi, or even 1200 dpi. In a DTP program, they DON'T all have to be reduced to the same, fixed resolution.

Thanks, Hoogo, I'll work with this! I still don't get the 50:50 but I'll keep looking for more information and trying to clarify it.

No worries, Hoogo. I find what you write very helpful.
