Hi,
I can't seem to find this at all. In photoshop if I make a selection from within one image and copy this to the clipboard then if I create a new document the size of that will default to the dimensions of the clipboard contents.
In photoline the default seems to be whatever was the size of the last new document.
Is it just a question of creating the document, pasting clipboard contents and then 'crop document'?
It seems somewhat counter intuitive, especially if the clipboard contents are larger than the just created document... wouldn't 'fit to contents' be more representative?
Still struggling with and adapting to the PL interface I guess.
Cheers
Rob

Re: New with selection
I guess that in your case, "Paste as Document" (in the Edit menu) would be the best solution - it creates a new document/picture from the clipboard content (same size, same colour mode, same colour profile). In some other programs, the same functionality is available as File -> New -> Using Clipboard (which I find more intuitive).
In general, imo, it makes as much sense to open a new picture with the previous dimensions as with the dimensions of the clipboard.
Cheers,
Burkhard.

Re: New with selection
Thanks Burkhard,
I knew it should be something straightforward like that, but wasn't looking under the right menu...
Like you I find
File->New->With clipboard
to be more intuitive, but is that just down to conditioning?
To me 'Paste' anything implies into the frontmost document, not to create a new document altogether...
As I said, still adjusting!
Cheers

Re: New with selection
I find "Paste as Document" fine ... !
EXCEPT ... IT'S WRONG ACCORDING TO PL ITSELF!
Go to the File menu and you see there are two kinds of windows/files/documents, There is "New" (raster image) and "New Document" (a page).
What is actually generated by the "Paste as Document" is NOT a "document" according to the File menu nomenclature, but a new picture window.
If you have copied a section of a picture, it should be "Paste as New Picture Window" -- I think it is useful to point out that the window opened will be a new one.
Alternatively -- File > New Picture > Using Clipboard Contents.
Maybe it would be useful to have it in both locations -- the File and the Edit menus, but taking care to use the sdame nomenclature to differentiate a picture window from a document.

Yes, another inconsistency in PL's nomenclature.greenmorpher hat geschrieben:I find "Paste as Document" fine ... !

To make things even more complicated, "Paste as Document" will create "real" documents (in Document mode) if the clipboard contains text.
Sometimes I am wondering if it is necessary to distinguish between picture mode and document mode at all …
Cheers,
Burkhard.

Re: New with selection
Oh, and it seems that it is quite common in the windows-language to call an opened file a document. It's even called MDI, multiple document interface, when you can work on more than one file at the time. But is there a better name for the PL-document than document?

Re: New with selection
"Document" would also be the generic term on the Mac. Maybe "Layout mode" could be a substitute for PL's document mode. (Hoogo, do you know a good reason why there is a distinction between "Document mode" and "Picture mode"? I don't see a reason. Instead of opening a picture or creating a new in picture mode, couldn't one just create a document of the right size (in pixels), set the color mode and profile as in the picture and add the image layer?)Hoogo hat geschrieben:Oh, and it seems that it is quite common in the windows-language to call an opened file a document. Re: New with selection
Hi,
I tried the 'Paste as Document' method and it doesn't work as expected. Yes I get a new window with the clipboard contents pasted, but I think what I want (or expect) is more 'paste as new picture'.
The document method produces an over-size window with the 'document' area demarcated by a rectangle with drop-shadow and a large white surround area and scrollbars. I don't want or need that.
The 'command-N' ('control-N' on PC) method opens a new picture window, I can then paste the clipboard, and finally 'crop document' to size the picture to the contents. That's what I expect (what I'm used to, at least), and amounts to what Geoff suggested as:
File > New Picture > Using Clipboard Contents
That's the closest match to expectation.
Anyway, at least there's a way of achieving it... though could be a bit more streamlined.
Cheers

Re: New with selection
PL creates a document for you when you paste from the clipboard? That's strange, for me it creates just an ordinary new picture.
I remember that I asked a while ago why it is necessary to have two modes, but I don't remember the reasons. But if I imagine that white sheet as a simple, real background layer for every picture, there would be quite some changes to the overall behaviour.

Re: New with selection
Maybe it's the Mac vs. the Windows version? I can even paste formatted text (from a web page or a Word document), and get a document containing just one text box. As soon as the Word doc contains pictures, PL will create an image, though.Hoogo hat geschrieben:PL creates a document for you when you paste from the clipboard? Re: New with selection
Sorry, I can't seem to find your question (and the Hubers' answer, of course) in the forum. Anyway, I wouldn't want a visible white background, but a document just the size of the picture. Just as if you loaded the picture and then switched to "Document Mode" in the Attributes dialog. Saving such a document currently gives a multiple layer warning (presumably counting the background color as a separate layer), but I don't believe that this could be a real obstacle.Hoogo hat geschrieben: I remember that I asked a while ago why it is necessary to have two modes, but I don't remember the reasons.
