Continuous Color with Multiple Brushstrokes

The PSP X2 help file says it better than I can regarding this paint brush option:

Continuous — specifies whether paint builds up when multiple brushstrokes are applied over the same area with opacity set at less than 100%. If this check box is marked, painting produces a continuous color, and repainting an area has no effect.

Yes, PL has the 'paint only once' option but the as long as you don’t release the mouse button just isn't realistic when, say, tinting a B&W photo.

Is there any way in PL to apply multiple brushstrokes without increasing the opacity of overlapped strokes but allowing the release of the mouse button now and again?

I would paint on a new layer. Afair there once has been such a hidden feature when holding shift, but I guess it has already been removed...

I guess the solution is to paint with the paint brush set at 100% intensity and adjust the opacity of the layer to get the desired tint. With 100% intensity there can be no buildup of paint when you overlap.
So you are just adjusting the tint with the layer opacity rather than with the brush intensity. That should work.
