Compatible plug-in - Topaz Adjust, etc.

Beitrag von greenmorpher »

Works with PL v.15 on OS X.6.6 and I have every reason to believe it works fine with PL on Windows.

On OS X, PL 15 running 64 bit, Topaz Adjust shows in the filters menu but crashes the program.

Running 32 bit (but NOT Rosetta), Topaz Adjust works perfectly.

Running 32 bit WITH Rosetta, Topaz Adjust shows up in the filters menu, but doesn't do nuffin'.

Before it showed up in PL, I had to go to Computer/Library/Application Support/Topaz Labs/Adjust 4/Plugins/ and copy the file "Topaz_adjust4.plugin" to your plug-ins folder.

A guy who's running it successfully in Canvas 12 on Windows says the procedure in Windows is:
In Windows, Topaz Labs installs itself in its own folder inside the Program Files folder where all Windows programs install themselves. What's necessary is to find the file "tladjust4ps.8bf" and copy it into the Plugins folder for Canvas.
Substitute PL for Canvas and you have the procedure.

Now -- I suspect that everything the Topaz Adjust plug/program does (it works as an alternative editing program from within iPhoto and I would highly recommend it in that role because it doesn't do the nasty compression with each save that iPhoto does -- in addition to having much, much more functionality, of course) could be done with PL, but the beauty of Topaz adjust is that it presents a whole bunch of alternative presets -- which adjust a bunch of stuff then you can fine tune the sliders.

In reality, I suspect PL could have a whole bunch of Actions that would correspond to the Topaz Adjust presets, but it hasn't. hence I recommend Topaz.

Have a look to make your valuable PL even more valuable. http://www.topazlabs.com/

My experience is the same with Topaz plug-ins: In Focus, ReMask 3 and Adjust 4. When installing, you can designate the directory of your choice.

I had a look at the Topaz Re-Mask 3 tutorial yesterday. Wow! that is some capability, isn't it? I don't need it now, but I would have given something quite significant for it a few years ago.

All Topaz plugins are running here with PL. They enrich the possibilities of PL and also other image-editors (XX and so on).
For people with some pure photographically sense this add-ons are evil but for me as an beginner this plugins are quite helpful.
According correction of barrel distortion, there are other good plugins available in the market. But my last post to my famous plugin was deleted - even PL doesn't provide the same functionality, which is not a big deal for me.
Why are there 3rd-party solutions available also for this SW from A***** (the big and evil one) - because this plugins are very specialized.
I would wish that PL would focus on image-editing and to increase the usability and let programmers of 3-party solutions also earn some money. There are some examples in the market but I'm afraid, that any more details in this post will get deleted.

Anyways best regards to down-under,
Andreas

BTW: the question about barrel distortion is frequent in this forum.
Maybe the developers consider to work together with some 3-party. Not to include the function into PL but to make some advice and maybe some bundle-price with some existing solution.
This would mean less work and to have an really proven solution immediately.

Sorry only some thought of a jackass ...

After an earlier post, confirming my experience that Topaz filters work in PL, I did some additional digging and testing. All of the Topaz filters have been upgraded in recent months. From indications on the Topaz Labs website, all but ReMask have been confirmed to work in six photo editing programs. ReMask requires layers and some on their list don't do layers.

All of these filters work in batch files. A few days ago I recorded an action in PL that included the latest version of the Topaz Adjust plugin. I then ran that action successfully on more than 100 identically-sized images in PL. Each time the plugin came up in the process queue, I had to select my setting in Topaz Adjust and apply the setting. Adjust closed, and the process moved to the next file in queue. So, I had to make that manual adjustment more than 100 times.

Curious, I explored the Topaz forum to determine if this was the way batch file processing is supposed to work with these plugins. It's not. The plugins are supposed to run in actions without any intervention by the operator while the action is running.

To confirm this for myself, I fired up the old photo editor I abandoned for PhotoLine. It's on the Topaz list. I recorded a script in that program that included the Topaz Adjust plugin. I found an appropriate setting of the tools in Adjust and saved that setting in the plugin before I applied it. When recording of the script was finished, I then ran the script on ten images of identical size. This time, when the script reached the Topaz Adjust step, a box came up on the screen, indicating I was entering Adjust, but the Adjust window never opened. Instead, the processing continued and the saved settings were applied automatically. Thus, the batch process was much faster per image.

If you have one of the newer Topaz plugins (not ReMask), have you tested it in a batch file? Did you get the same behavior I experienced with PL or did the batch file run with no intervention when it reached the plugin as I found in my test with the other editing program? Is it different on the Mac platform? Does it work differently in PL 15.xx?

I hope it's possible to get PL to run these plugins in a batch file with no intervention, because would save a lot of time.

Thanks.

Bob,

also for me this is not working. I can only guess that PL doesn't support the plugin 100%. It seems that the information which setting to use is not recorded or maybe not transfered to the plugin at startup.
For me this is not a big deal, I don't have the need to use plugins in actions but I can understand that this might be useful for others.
Maybe if there is no reaction here from computerinsel it is worth to send an email to the support.
