A guy named Calvin Hollywood has posted a very interesting sharpening tutorial a few months ago. The technique has become quite popular on some discussion forums. I like the effect. http://www.scottkelby.com/blog/2010/archives/8691
The nice thing is that the technique can be adapted more or less 1:1 in photoline if one substitutes the PL "Adaptive Soften" tool for PS's "Surface Blur".

I think that that you can get the effect much easier in PL. Add an "Adaptive Soften" adjustemnt layer and set its intenisty to a negative value (like –50 %, this controls how strong the effect will be). You can set the layer mode of the adjustment layer to "Overlay" if you prefer.
Basically, this is similar to the clarity filter that has been discussed elsewhere on this forum.

Makes it even easier. I will give it a try.
What remains new for me is the option to more or less prevent the halos with the threshold slider in adaptive soften.
You can also get a somewhat similar exaggerated effect with "Spicify" or "Vibrtance" in Topaz Adjustment plug-in.
