Google says that defringe removes unwanted or unclean pixels from the border of a layer. I did not understand how that is done by Photoshop, the first description showed a simple cutting off of these pixels.

If it is just about this simple way, I would choose "Filter > other> minimum". Select the Alpha-channel only, intensity 100% and size 1 should already do it.

For prettier ways I would start by creating a layer mask from the alpha channel (use that mask button at the bottom of the layer list). After that you can touch the colors and the transparency separately.

Is it something like "edge sharpening" available in some programs or is that just increasing edge contrast?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply Hoogo, that trick of Minimum is semi Ok but to my eyes is too agresive.

I copy-paste what the PS help say:
When you move or paste a selection, some of the pixels surrounding the selection border are included with the selection. These extra pixels can result in a fringe or halo around the edges of the selection. The Defringe Layer command replaces the color of any fringe pixels with the colors of nearby pixels containing pure colors (those without background color). For example, if you select a yellow object on a blue background and then move the selection, some of the blue background is moved with the object. Defringe Layer replaces the blue pixels with yellow pixels.

Hiya Hoogo

Now I've seen the defringing thing explained, obviously that it quite different from edge sharpening. The defringing thing looks like something built around a very narrowly defined magic wand selection and replaces rogue pixels with background color pixels. Nice tool, not wanted every day in the work I do, but handy on occasion.

Edge sharpening is a sharpening tool that emphasizes changes, applying sharpening and/or contrast across places where color or tone changes with an edge so that the edge is emphasized, rather than applying sharpening across the whole image. Canvas has it but it's s bit crude and I haven't used it a lot -- in fact, I can't remember when I last used it. I was just trying to work up an example and it didn't work well on the pix I had immediately to hand. The diagram gives an idea of how it works. The darker color/tone goes a bit darker and the lighter a bit lighter along the edge. It should not be so much that it causes a visible halo, of course, but that's a danger. Obviously, the best edge sharpener would allow some customization for different circumstances in the manner of PL's general sharpener.

Think of this situation -- you have a misty morning and a tree on the edge of the mist which stands out fairly well, but you want it to be a bit sharper on the edges to separate it from the misty background, but you don't want the mistiness of the background compromised. Okay, edge sharpening will pick up the stronger contrasts round that tree and sharpen them so it stands out better, but it won't pick up the lesser contrasts in the mist so it won't be sharpened -- it will remain misty. Standard sharpening would reduce the mistiness of the mist.

Cheers, geoff

Try this action. "View > Panels > Actions", right-click into it and choose merge (not load!).
Currently a simple blurring looks like the best way to estimate the real colors. If you know that the edges are poisoned by white or black, minimum or maximum would work fine instead.

That edge sharpening looks like an usual USM (unsharp mask) to me?

I don't think so, Hoogo. it also offers Unsharp Masking as a separate option in the sharpening menu.

Thank you so much for your time, this action works very good in some circumstances, but in others leave another kind of halo, but with some tweaks I can get rid of those.
Now let´s hope the next version bring a built in Defringe :D

Again I really appreciate your time and effort.
