I've tried recording it. Scaling the pix to 50% is fine; then "savingas" to 80% quality doesn't work. The pictures are saved at 100%. Any clues?
PL v.17, 32 bit mode, Mac OS X.6.8.
I haven’t done batch processing before. And I was just congratulating myself on fighting my way through the inadequate manual which doesn’t you through the menus to the various commands ...
I don't have PL here right now, but normally you'd only do the rescaling via an action and specify the destination format and compression settings directly in the batch dialogue.
Right, Burkhardt, got that. I was saving it as "Same format" which doesn't give you the JPEG save options. I was assuming "Same format" meant JPEG -- but it does not, it means JPEG st the current settings.
I started with a bunch of 12 MPX OOC JPEGs, round 4 MB each. I wanted to reduce them to about 400 KB each.
So I successfully scaled the batch to 50% but saving as "Same format" using the ready-made Action that comes with PL. Fine so far, but now they were about 2.5 MB each.
Then I tried setting up an action which would scale to 50% AND save as to JPEG 80% -- leaving the output option at "Same format" (assuming that meant JPEG). They scaled, but the second part of the action didn’t work.
That was the point at which I posted my question. Having received your response this morning, I set up a second Batch Convert, All files, scaling to 50% but specifying a new folder as the destination and setting the output to JPEG 80%.
It worked.
The files were still too big for my requirements, so I decided to run the same files through the same batch conversion, i.e. to scale them to 50% again and save them again as JPEGs 80%.
But when I tried to apply the same conversion a second time, i.e. to the converted files, PL appeared to go through the motions but didn’t convert the files.
At some point it started by opening the files one by one demanding that I click OK on the scaling and also adjust the JPEG saving settings and OK that too. I think that was when I was saving them back to the source file.
Huh? Is there some sort of lock to prevent the same conversion being applied for the second time? If so, why not a pop-up warning?
I finally got my files converted okay by setting up a new action to scale to 33%, but there just seems to be undocumented behavior here that needs to be looked into and eliminated OR documented.

Works here. Could it be that you accidentally started from the original images, rather than the converted ones? In that case, PL just does the job again, replacing the scaled down version with fresh (but identical) copies. Sometimes, it's a bit unfortunate that in batch mode, PL overwrites existing files without a warning.
