Creating a colour filled layer for corrections.

In many of the adjustments I make in my photos I use a grey filled layer, change the blend mode to something like Overlay, soft or hard light and then paint on it with dilute black or white for dodging and burning.

Currently I create an RGB layer, set the foreground colour to grey, use the "fill with foreground" command under tools/lasso and then reset the palettes.

I can set this up as an action of course but is there a more direct way of creating a colour filled layer that I'm missing?

It's fast enough used as an action and I'm building quite a collection of those now.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but the action Brighten/Darken included with Photoline does a similar thing.

I had a look at that and it has similarities but is not quite as flexible.

I guess it's just the way I'm used to working but it's always nice to have options.
