Hidden Gem features in Photoline

Beitrag von Herbert123 »

Let's start a thread with those little hidden features that remain somewhat hidden beneath Photoline's surface to help out users who start out with PL. I'll try to keep this first post updated whenever one of you comes up with a new "gem". I'll create categories once we have a good number of hidden tips and secrets going!

Working with Channels
  • You can view and examine the channels of any colour space by switching the background layer to a different layer type in the layer properties. This technique is applicable in image mode, and is non-destructive for all layers except the background layer. (In document mode, you can achieve the same effect by assigning a document colour space in the document attributes pane – this is fully non-destructive.)

But beware: you are changing the document's working colour space, so blending modes, adjustment layers, layer transparency etc. may (and usually do) work differently.
Working with Colours
  • right mouse-clicking either the foreground or background colour in the tools palette grants you access to "Harmony": a harmonious colour picker and creator.
Fun & Games
  • Hold down ALT-CTRL (Win) or OPTION-CTRL (Mac) while choosing "About PhotoLine" in the ?/application menu to play a remake of CrossFire (originally released on VIC-20 in 1981!) Controls: cursor keys, press SPACE and a direction to shoot.

  • Hold down CTRL-SHIFT (Win) or CTRL-SHIFT (Mac) while choosing "About PhotoLine" in the ?/application menu to cheat at Sudoku

Good morning

An online translator to help me once again.

The tip with the right click is awesome. A harmonious color picker can help much in the work, thank you!

How to start the games on a Mac is beyond me though. According to the press the keyboard shortcuts you have to do something? But what?

Best regards,
Torsten

Right-click is the same as Ctrl-left click on the Mac (Harmony is just in the context menu).

Cheers

Actually, you have to press Alt-Cmd while choosing "About PhotoLine …" on OS X, no idea how to activate the sudoku solver.

Cheers

PhotoLine is one of those pixel editors that actually display the full size of digital photos. I have been told that some (perhaps all?) digital cameras actually take larger images than the declared image size but, since the manufacturer cannot guarantee the quality of the edges, the official size of the photo is smaller than the physical size and most editors show only the declared and official size (this is what I was told when I enquired about this. If the specifics are wrong here I apologize).

For example, I have a Canon 5D3 and the official image size is 5760 x 3840 and, when I load the raw images into editors like Photoshop, Elements and others, that is what I see and what I get. But when I load the same image into PhotoLine I find the image size is 5796 x 3870. That is, there are an extra 36 pixels on the sides and 30 on the top and bottom on each line of the image. PhotoLine is not the only editor to do that (PhotoNinja and SageLight also do it), but it can easily escape your notice if you are not looking. Often PL shows the tops, bottoms and/or sides of a building that I am too close to whereas those same images lose the tops, bottoms and/or sides in other editors.

I consider that a hidden gem of functionality.

That's pretty close to the way I understand it: Because the camera's sensor is overlaid with a colour filter array, the process of de-mosaicking requires each sensor well in the camera to have sensor wells surrounding it to interpolate the data into the resulting image pixel. Obviously, that cannot happen with sensor wells at the edges, so most de-mosaicked RAW images are only displayed with the pixels that have been interpolated using the "complete" number of surrounding sensor wells.

Whether or not the "extra" data from those edge sensor wells is important is a matter of personal opinion, of course.

Yes, I think it can be eeeeeasily done....

Space - then tap left, right, up, or down to shoot.

You can view and examine the channels of any colour space by switching the background layer to a different layer type in the layer properties. As long as the original image(s) reside in their own layer(s) this is a non-destructive action, because the actual colour information is retained in the individual layers. This technique only works in image mode, not in document mode.
Just to clarify: this is non-destructive for all layers except the background layer. (In document mode, you can achieve the same effect by assigning a document colour space in the document attributes pane – this is fully non-destructive.)
