Removing jpg compression artifacts

Beitrag von ZoltanE »

What is the best way to remove the jpg compression artifacts from an image? I played
around with filters but couldn't find a silver bullet so I guess a series of steps should be
taken.

Try "Adaptive Soften". Keep the theshold at 20 (or even larger), then increase the radius until the artefacts just disappear (at 100 % view). Lower the threshold until artefacts re-appear, then set it a bit higher.

If that doesn't work, a small sample pic showing would be great (maybe 128 x 128, export as png so you don't add new artefacts). This forum doesn't allow large attachments.

Cheers

Burkhard.

Ah indeed it does a decent job, especially when combined with this FilterForge filter:

It's also great that it can be an adjustment layer too so with a mask I can weaken the
effect when it destroys detail.

I have to admit I use Topaz DeJPEG for this now, because the result is very good and controllable. I was unaware of FF's DeJPEG filter - I tried it, and it did not live up to expectations compared to Topaz's de-artifacting processing.
