PhotoLine Wikipedia page

Post by maho »

Hello guys,

The Wikipedia page for PhotoLine is out of date (stops at version 19). This falsely suggests that there has been no innovations in PL for many years.

Just a suggestion - it would be worth updating this page, if you can. Might help promote the product.

Yes, i also noticed that long time ago. Also there are a lot of articles about file formats where PhotoLine should be added to list of supported apps. For example JPEG XL article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG_XL#O ... re_support

I am working on rewriting the wikipedia article.

I'd like to expand on PhotoLine's history a bit. Was Cranach in/around 1990 the precursor of what PhotoLine was to become later in 1996?

https://www.atarimania.com/reviews/hi_r ... ic_12_.jpg

It is referred to in one of PhotoLine's first reviews:

We used to make graphics cards for ATARI computers.
At some point, the graphics cards were “perfect” and business declined because ATARI was losing more and more market share.
So we thought about programming a game.
We needed graphics for it. Unfortunately, the ATARI didn't have the image editing program that was ideal for our project.
Cranach came close, but it was very expensive and very complicated to use.
This resulted in contact with the Cranach manufacturer tms.
They wanted to leave the ATARI market at the time and offered us the product.
We then took it over.
But it was very difficult to sell.
So in 1995 we started to program a completely new program “PhotoLine”. It naturally contained a great deal of know-how from Cranach. But we programmed it all from scratch because PhotoLine was made in C++ and Cranach was still written in simple C.

Thanks for that interesting early history of PhotoLine, Gerhard!

I "discovered" personally PL in 2001. I had a project with a meager budget and Photoshop was outrageously expensive. There we several online reviews that compared PL's feature set favorable with their competitors. PL performed much better than CorelDraw, which is was the first program I tried.

Anywho, I hope you (or someone else) can update the Wikipedia page. Free advertising.

Thank you for the historic insight behind the origins of PhotoLine, Gerhard!

Will be adding this to the wiki today.

Out of curiosity: what kind of game were you originally planning to work on? Since PhotoLine has two hidden Easter eggs (games)...

Shift-Ctrl-About PhotoLine/Über PhotoLine = Suduko Game

Ctrl-Alt-About PhotoLine/Über PhotoLine = CrossFire

Hey people,

I made (rather a lot of) changes to the Wikipedia page. Can you check, and please let me know if there are issues.

I probably still have to add more references. @Gerhard: let me know if the Early history contains mistakes or misinterpretations in my side. :-)

Cheers!

Screenshots and app Icon need to be updated. Screenshots should be saved in normal size. Curernt screenshot size is extremely small. Perfectly it should be macOS and Windows screenshots both from modern OS versions. I am on legacy macOS Mojave, so i can't help with screenshots, but here is PNG extracted from icon.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Great work on the Wikipedia updates guys!

One possible issue remains - the current wiki page claims that one of the PL developers is an Olympic gymnast born in 1934. Might want to remove that link if it happens to be untrue... LOL.

I planned to do those next and add a screenshot of the old PhotoLine in the history section as well. :-)

Thanks for the icon - saves time!

Yep, noticed that myself earlier... I changed the wiki code in Visual Studio Code, and pasted it back into Wikipedia - only to discover that the empty Gerhard link had been automatically linked to that gymnast!

I fixed it earlier.

Maybe change
Editing in PhotoLine is mostly non-destructive.
to
Editing and Color Management in PhotoLine is mostly non-destructive

color depth, image resolution, color model, and ICC profile are preserved for each individual layer.
to
color depth, image resolution, color model, and ICC profile are preserved for each individual layer or group.

Also it probably could be explained that PhotoLine can open raw files as linear unmodified non color managed source images. This is important to know because there are not too many raw editors that can do it.

Also it makes sense to add full list of supported file formats and links to Wiki page of each file format if possible. This could be boring work :)

Before I upload the PhotoLine icon/logo, I need permission from Gerhard and Martin to do so. The image is uploaded to wikipedia and I need explicit permission because it is not my logo - it's theirs.

Those suggestions are very good and I added them just now.

I considered a list of supported file formats, and will do it, but I already spent an entire afternoon on editing the page! Perhaps sometime this week. It gonna be a loooooong list...
