Interesting about the names. I was just reading an old document, a translation from German, about New Ireland. They must have made the mistake of translating the names of the islands, or rather, substituting the current names. The East and West division of New Britain goes further back than 1966 (it was in place when I first arrived in Rabaul in 1963) but initially that might have been a division of a New Britain District into two sub-districts, with the division into two Districts (and now Provinces) taking place in 1966. Interesting (to me, anyway!bkh hat geschrieben:I was pretty sure they didn't use "New Britain" for one of their colonies and had a quick look. According to the German Wikipedia, New Britain was called Neupommern (New Pomerania, after the German state Pomerania), and the division into "East" and "West" provinces seems to date back only to 1966. Of course, I don't know if either term was ever used by the locals at that time. It's curious that traditions like "Oktoberfest" continue to exist after 100 years (or was it a recent re-invention like everywhere else) – anyway, enjoy the beer!greenmorpher hat geschrieben:But they didn't change the name of East New Britain to a German name, so far as I know. Why not???
Oktoberfest is a revival although I seem to remember certain raffish elements engaging in excessive beer drinking in October back in the day; there was quite a solid little German community back in the 1960s centered around a company called Breckwoldt and the Catholic Mission which still has a strong German influence and support. We see quite a few German cultural tourists too.
Last week I met a Korean guy searching for "the old German cemetery". He says the only books in Korean about the islands are tourist guide books and the like; he wants to write the definitive book in Korean on the subject!
Afaik, PL never adds transparency to a picture by itself. You'll always have to turn it on – either explicitly, e.g. by using "Layer Properties …" or by ticking the "Transparency" checkbox in the layer attributes, or implicitly – e. g. the Auto-Transparency tool turns on transparency. Layers created by "New Layer" are also transparent by default.[/quote]greenmorpher hat geschrieben:THE TROUBLE NOW IS that I need help to make Add Transparency the default again. Having switched it off, it is reluctant to come back on unless I switch it on when I open each image! And I don’t want to do that. I use it quite a bit and I NEVER erase to the background color. Help, someone, please! If I don’t have it as a default then don't use it for a while, I am likely to forget how to invoke it. Anno bloody Domini and all that.
That’s weird, Burkhard, because I'm sure I've been getting transparency attached when I open a pic and I haven’t known until today about adding transparency in Layer Properties!!! (Do I hear widespread disbelievinf muttering in the background? It’s true!) Further, when I initially tried PTLensEdit as an External App, it refused to work with the pix I opened because they had the Alpha thing happening!
In fact, adding transparency in PL has been a niggle with me! I've always liked Canvas's approach -- it has "Add Transparency" as a first level menu item to which I added a keybard shortcut. Which I could do the same in PL. Seems the best I can do is add a shortcut to open Layer Properties.
Layer attributes? Now you’ve moved into alien territory for me again! Where do I find "layer attributes"?
Cheers, geoff
